What is an entry level UX designer?

Entry level UX designers are professionals at the beginning of their careers in user experience (UX) design. They are responsible for helping to create intuitive and user-friendly digital products, such as websites and mobile apps, by focusing on the needs and behaviors of users. Their tasks often include conducting user research, creating wireframes and prototypes, and collaborating with other team members to improve overall product usability. Entry level UX designers typically work under the guidance of more experienced designers and are expected to have some foundational knowledge of design tools and principles.

What does an entry level UX designer do?

An entry-level UX designer helps design products that provide a positive customer or user experience. Their responsibilities often include working with elements of design, function, branding, and usability. Other duties of an entry-level UX designer include modifying information architecture to improve user interface (UI), creating wireframes, digital prototyping, and product testing. Someone in this position, also referred to as a junior designer, works under the supervision of an experienced designer to gain skills and professional experience. The qualifications you need to become an entry-level UX designer vary, but often include training or a postsecondary degree in computer science or a relevant field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level UX designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level UX Designer, foundational skills in user research, wireframing, prototyping, and an understanding of user-centered design principles—often supported by a degree or certification in design or a related field—are essential. Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and usability testing platforms is typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help designers effectively translate user needs into intuitive interfaces and work seamlessly with cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial for creating engaging, accessible digital experiences that meet both user and business goals.

What types of projects do entry level UX designers typically work on, and how much creative input can they expect to have?

Entry level UX designers often start by working on smaller features within larger projects, such as refining user flows, creating wireframes, or conducting usability tests under the guidance of senior team members. While initial creative input may be somewhat limited, many organizations encourage junior designers to share ideas during team meetings and design critiques. As you demonstrate your skills and initiative, you'll likely gain more ownership over specific components or even lead small projects. Collaboration with UI designers, developers, and product managers is a regular part of the role, providing valuable exposure to different aspects of the design process.

Is it hard to get an entry level UX designer job?

Securing an entry-level UX designer position can be competitive, but candidates with a strong portfolio, basic knowledge of design tools like Figma or Adobe XD, and understanding of user-centered design principles often find opportunities more accessible. Building relevant skills through courses, internships, or freelance projects can improve chances of landing an entry-level role.

Job description

Zof AI is seeking a User Experience Designer to design how engineers come to trust autonomous agents that change their code. This role owns the research and interaction work behind the review surface: reading the evidence behind a proposed fix, judging whether the validation holds, and approving it or sending it back. If you have worked as a Product Designer, Interaction Designer, UX Researcher, or UI/UX Designer, this is that discipline at Zof AI. The ideal candidate talks to real engineers, turns those conversations into flows and interaction patterns, and treats the design system as how good decisions stay consistent.

Design · Mid-level · Full-time · On-site · San Francisco, CA

Responsibilities
  • Design the review experience where engineers accept, reject, or revise agent-proposed code changes.
  • Run research with engineers and QA leads to learn how trust in automation is built and lost.
  • Design how evidence, reproduction steps, and validation results are presented so review decisions are fast and informed.
  • Turn research findings into flows, wireframes, and interaction specs engineering can build from.
  • Prototype and test interaction patterns for agent status, uncertainty, and failure states.
  • Extend the design system with components and patterns for reviewing machine-generated work.
  • Partner with product and engineering from problem framing through shipped experience.
  • Use AI tools daily to compress the loop from research question to testable prototype.
Requirements
  • Experience designing complex product flows end to end.
  • A portfolio showing research that changed a design decision.
  • Working knowledge of research methods, from interviews to usability testing.
  • Ability to move from research to wireframes to interactive prototypes.
  • Familiarity with design systems and component-level thinking.
  • Comfort collaborating closely with engineers and designing for technical users.
  • Clear written and verbal communication.
  • Comfort operating in a fast-moving environment.
Nice to have
  • Experience designing for developer, technical, or enterprise tools.
  • Experience designing review, approval, or moderation workflows.
  • Familiarity with reading code or working in a Git-based workflow.
  • Some comfort prototyping in code or working in a front-end codebase.

Daily use of AI tools for research synthesis, prototyping, and design iteration is required
