What types of projects do entry level UX designers typically work on, and how much creative input can they expect to have?

Entry level UX designers often start by working on smaller features within larger projects, such as refining user flows, creating wireframes, or conducting usability tests under the guidance of senior team members. While initial creative input may be somewhat limited, many organizations encourage junior designers to share ideas during team meetings and design critiques. As you demonstrate your skills and initiative, you'll likely gain more ownership over specific components or even lead small projects. Collaboration with UI designers, developers, and product managers is a regular part of the role, providing valuable exposure to different aspects of the design process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level UX designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level UX Designer, foundational skills in user research, wireframing, prototyping, and an understanding of user-centered design principles—often supported by a degree or certification in design or a related field—are essential. Familiarity with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and usability testing platforms is typically required. Strong communication, empathy, and collaboration skills help designers effectively translate user needs into intuitive interfaces and work seamlessly with cross-functional teams. These abilities are crucial for creating engaging, accessible digital experiences that meet both user and business goals.

What does an entry level UX designer do?

An entry-level UX designer helps design products that provide a positive customer or user experience. Their responsibilities often include working with elements of design, function, branding, and usability. Other duties of an entry-level UX designer include modifying information architecture to improve user interface (UI), creating wireframes, digital prototyping, and product testing. Someone in this position, also referred to as a junior designer, works under the supervision of an experienced designer to gain skills and professional experience. The qualifications you need to become an entry-level UX designer vary, but often include training or a postsecondary degree in computer science or a relevant field.

What is an entry level UX designer?

Entry level UX designers are professionals at the beginning of their careers in user experience (UX) design. They are responsible for helping to create intuitive and user-friendly digital products, such as websites and mobile apps, by focusing on the needs and behaviors of users. Their tasks often include conducting user research, creating wireframes and prototypes, and collaborating with other team members to improve overall product usability. Entry level UX designers typically work under the guidance of more experienced designers and are expected to have some foundational knowledge of design tools and principles.

Are entry level UX designer jobs hard to get?

Entry level UX designer jobs can be competitive, as many candidates are entering the field with similar skills such as wireframing, prototyping, and user research. Success often depends on a strong portfolio, relevant internships, and familiarity with design tools like Figma or Adobe XD.

How do I become an entry level UX designer with no experience?

To become an entry-level UX designer with no experience, focus on building a portfolio by creating sample projects or redesigns, learn key tools like Figma or Adobe XD, and gain foundational knowledge through online courses or certifications. Internships, volunteering, or freelance work can also provide practical experience and help develop your skills in user research, wireframing, and usability testing.

Job description

AppFolio is more than a company. We’re a community of dreamers, big thinkers, problem solvers, active listeners, and multipliers. At every opportunity, we set the pace while delivering innovation built to carry real estate into the future. One in which every experience feels effortless, yet meaningful. Where customers are empowered to take on any opportunity. We show up as one team, connected by our values to be a force for good. Because together, we have the power to create extraordinary outcomes for our customers, our communities, and ourselves.
We love where we work, and you can, too.
Conversations are at the heart of how our customers run their businesses. Property managers spend much of their time communicating with prospects— answering questions, scheduling showings, and building trust. The UX Designer for our Agentic AI Leasing product will design intuitive, business-focused, cross-channel (voice, text, web) experiences that optimize our customers’ sales funnel, creating space for property managers to focus on the connections that matter most.
The ideal candidate will thrive in a highly collaborative environment, eager to apply Agile and Lean UX techniques while working on a small scrum team alongside Software Engineers, QA Engineers, and Product Managers to build innovative AI-driven solutions.

Your impact
  • Lead the design of agentic AI experiences in the leasing domain, ensuring conversational flows feel intuitive and aligned with business and customer needs
  • Collaborate with your Product Management partner on roadmap and strategy, working as a tireless advocate for the end user and helping to balance those needs with those of the business
  • Meet complex design challenges by participating alongside engineering, QA, and product in LeanUX-inspired activities such as design studios and story mapping
  • Ongoing, close collaboration with team members during each sprint, including impromptu discussions, brainstorming, pairing, and conversation thread reviews
  • Support the team as needed with wireframes, flow diagrams, and mock-ups to efficiently communicate and validate design ideas
  • Facilitate user research to validate ideas and prototypes, and conduct ongoing usability testing of the working software
  • Evangelize a cohesive user experience via the consistent use of UI patterns from our design system and participation in weekly Design Crits with the Leasing UX team.

Qualifications
  • Strong technical aptitude, product common sense, and curiosity combined with a genuine love for products, people, and user experience
  • Experience with a variety of UX deliverables (customer journeys, wireframes, user flows, mockups, prototypes, etc.), paired with a keen sense of when to choose the right tool(s) to communicate the design
  • A portfolio of software design that demonstrates your design process, skills and creativity
  • Experience conducting user research, distilling data to insights, and using insights to inform the product experience
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of Agile UX and Lean UX methodologies and experience working in a highly collaborative, agile environment is a huge plus
  • Previous experience with agentic AI is highly desired

Must have
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in user experience design
