Key responsibilities

  • Create detailed and visually compelling UI designs for operating systems, applications, and web pages for film and television productions.

  • Design mockups for phones, tablets, and computers that align with the visual style and narrative of the production.

  • Animate UI designs to address scripted beats and translate feedback into production-ready work.

Job description

User Interface Designer

Scarab Digital | Vancouver-based film and television productions | Staff position | Hybrid optional

A staff role for a designer with a natural eye for believable screen interfaces, strong visual judgment, and the drive to grow inside active film and television productions.

The Short Version

You’ll do well here if you:

• have a natural eye for design and can create believable user interfaces.

• care about stunning visuals, readability, typography, and story; not just UX theory.

• are coachable, accountable, and ready to grow with mentorship from an experienced design team.

• want to build interactive and moving UI mockups for phones, tablets, and computers inside film and television worlds.

If that sounds like you, keep reading.

Who We Are

We're not just any content creation and motion picture equipment rental company; we're Scarab Digital, a creative powerhouse of innovation in digital production. Born from a desire to do things differently and strive to exceed creative and technological expectations, we've made our mark by transforming the visual storytelling landscape in the design of screen graphics, immersive virtual production experiences, and so much more.

Our one-stop-shop approach, combining creativity with cutting-edge technology, has established us as a go-to partner for productions seeking to create compelling, visually stunning content.

The Opportunity

We are looking for someone with a natural eye for design who we can mentor to create interactive and moving UI design mockups for phones, tablets, and computers inside the worlds of film and television productions in Vancouver.

While a natural gift for creating believable user interfaces is a must, we are willing to train the right candidate on motion design in After Effects and interaction design in ProtoPie. Any existing experience with those tools is a massive plus.

As a User Interface Designer, you will play a crucial role in shaping the digital landscapes of our film and television productions. You will collaborate with our experienced design team to create visually stunning and realistic mockups of operating systems, applications, and web pages for use on computers, phones, and tablets.

What We Do

Scarab Digital creates story-driven screen graphics for film and television: operating systems, applications, websites, phone screens, tablet screens, computer screens, messaging moments, social interfaces, dashboards, and speculative UI/FUI worlds.

These graphics are not decorative. They need to read clearly on camera, feel true to the world of the story, and help move the narrative forward.

What Makes This Role Different

• This is not purely product UX design.

• This is not template-based web design.

• This is not decorative screen design for its own sake.

• The job is to design interfaces that feel believable, cinematic, visually strong, and story-useful.

What You Will Do

• Work closely with senior designers to understand project requirements and objectives.

• Create detailed and visually compelling UI designs for operating systems, applications, and web pages.

• Design mockups for phones, tablets, and computers inside film and television productions.

• Ensure that UI designs align with the overall visual style and narrative of the production.

• Stay updated on industry trends and technological advancements to enhance the realism of digital interfaces.

• Animate UI designs to address scripted beats.

• Translate notes, references, and feedback into stronger production-ready design work.

You’ll Thrive Here If

• You take ownership of your work instead of waiting to be managed through every step.

• You are coachable, curious, and serious about getting better quickly.

• You care about readability, typography, hierarchy, timing, and visual storytelling.

• You can take direct feedback without defensiveness and turn it into better work.

• You have the instincts of an A-player: accountable, resourceful, reliable, and committed to raising the standard around you.

• You bring positive creative fuel to the team; the kind of energy that helps ideas move, problems get solved, and people trust you more over time.

Who We Are Looking For

We seek individuals ready to live above themselves, embodying our core principles and contributing to our dynamic environment. Scarab Digital could be the right place for you if you align with these principles:

• Accountability: See it, own it, solve it, do it. Become part of the solution.

• Proactivity: Act now and always ask, "What else can I do?"

• Excellence: Reject average and take personal ownership with pride.

• Respect: Care about others, their feelings, and the impact of how you communicate.

• Continuous Improvement: Ask for feedback by asking, "What coaching do you have for me?" and "What can I do better?"

If these principles resonate with you and you're ready to surpass average, let's see if you are the fit we seek. Your honesty in assessing your fit with our culture is crucial for your career and our company's success.

To Be an All-Star

• Strong portfolio showcasing UI design skills and an understanding of visual storytelling.

• Education in Graphic Design, and knowledge of Interaction Design.

• Strong graphic design and typography skills.

• Proficiency in design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Sketch, Figma, or similar.

• Comfort working in Photoshop, Illustrator, and After Effects as part of a daily creative workflow.

• Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

• Ability to adapt to fast-paced production schedules and tight deadlines.

• Clear evidence that you can create believable interfaces, not just attractive screens.

Software Knowledge

• Adobe Illustrator or Figma

• Adobe Photoshop

• Adobe After Effects

• ProtoPie bonus

Portfolio

Portfolio designs should be created entirely by you, without the aid of templates or AI. Feel free to submit school or personal projects. We want to see your best work and understand your eye for design.

Because we create interfaces for film and television, we are more interested in stunning visuals than UX breakdowns.

Required

• Phone app mockup, such as messages, social media, dating, or similar.

• Website mockup, such as a news article, forum, online store, or similar.

Bonus

• Desktop app mockup, such as a point-of-sale system, mapping interface, CCTV viewer, or similar.

• Medical device interfaces, such as vitals, ultrasound, MRI, X-ray, or similar.

• FUI / fantasy user interfaces, such as spaceship controls, mapping, comms, or similar.

• Gaming interfaces, such as a pause screen, in-game overlay, or similar.

Bonus Skills

• Experience with motion graphics and animation.

• Knowledge of 3D design software is a plus.

• Experience with film, television, games, title work, or narrative screen graphics.

• Comfort thinking in UI systems, not just one-off screens.

This Role Is Probably Not a Fit If

• You need every creative decision over-prescribed before you can begin.

• You treat notes as friction instead of part of making the work better.

• You are more interested in decorative visuals than story-useful screen design.

• You struggle with fast-moving deadlines, shifting production needs, or clear communication.

• You want to rely on templates or AI-generated design work instead of showing your own visual judgment.

Why Work Here

• You’ll collaborate with a company at the forefront of digital production.

• You’ll thrive in a workspace that values creativity, dynamism, and groundbreaking ideas.

• You’ll embark on a professional growth and leadership development journey in an environment that celebrates innovation.

• You’ll work on real screen graphics that live inside film and television stories, where your design choices help shape what audiences see.

A Note From Us

If you have a strong natural eye for UI design, care about story, and want to grow under mentorship while contributing to real productions, we would like to see your work. We care about talent, potential, ownership, coachability, and the quality of your eye. We also care about how people work with others. Both matter here.
