Main Purpose of Job
A Correctional Maintenance Officer I Maintenance Mechanic is the entry level of work involving the custody, security and supervision of adult inmates in maintenance and repair work in a correctional environment. Employees in this classification do not supervise other positions.
The main purpose of a Correctional Maintenance Officer Grounds Supervision position is the landscaping, cultivation, and structural upkeep of the facility's outdoor areas, the instruction and supervision of incarcerated individuals assigned to the grounds crew, and the maintenance of perimeter custody and security.
POSITION DUTIES
Position duties include:

• Maintaining control and discipline among incarcerated individuals.
• Conducting searches for contraband items.
• Administering verbal or written disciplinary actions to incarcerated individuals for any violations of conduct standards.
• Enforcing safety, sanitary, custody and security rules and regulations.
• Assigning installation maintenance or repair tasks to designated incarcerated individuals performing at various levels of proficiency in the trade.
• Training and instructing incarcerated individuals regarding methods and techniques, using tools and equipment, and proper care of tools and equipment.
• Inspecting and approving/disapproving all work performed by incarcerated individuals for adherence to quality standards.
• Estimating time, materials and supplies needed to conduct assigned maintenance or repair tasks.
• Orders supplies and materials needed; keeping records of tools, supplies and materials used.
• Personally performs certain installation, maintenance or repair tasks on plumbing infrastructure.
• Planning and implementing appropriate procedures,
• Operating hand and power tools and equipment needed.
• Escorting third party vendors and inspecting completed work assignment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.
Experience: Two years of maintenance mechanic experience.
Notes:
1. The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.
2. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience in correctional institutional specialty codes in the criminal justice field of work at a rate of two years of military experience for the required experience.
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants with the following knowledge, skills and abilities:

• Experience and ability to perform a variety of general building repairs and maintenance such as interior and exterior painting, electrical, plumbing or mechanical maintenance, masonry and carpentry

• Experience and ability to periodically inspects equipment, makes adjustments and repairs, and performs preventive maintenance tasks

• Experience and ability to repair and maintain machinery such as motors, engines, compressors or other mechanical equipment;

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
1. Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland prior to permanent appointment.
2. Some positions in this classification may require employees to acquire the appropriate Maryland driver's license to operate motor vehicles for the transportation of inmates or supplies.
3. Employees who have not already done so must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Selection standards for Correctional Officer certification are established by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code. These selection criteria are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations Title 12, Subtitle 10, Chapter 01 and include the following:
U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
Must be at least 21 years of age
A completed background investigation
Oral interview
Physical examination.
2. Employees in this classification are subject to call-in 24 hours a day and, therefore, must provide the employing agency with a telephone number where they can be reached.
3. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
SELECTION PROCESS
Becoming a Correctional Maintenance Officerrequires that a recruit completes the Entry Level Training Program at the Training Academy through the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission (MPCTC), at one of our regional locations throughout the state of Maryland. Upon successful graduation from the Academy, individuals will be assigned to facilities throughout the state of Maryland. This recruitment will be used to fill vacancies throughout the State of Maryland.
Please indicate on your application all the counties in the state of Maryland where you are willing to accept employment. Candidates will remain on the certified eligible list for a period of two years.

Successful candidates placed on the eligible (employment) list for at least one year.
Common Disqualifiers
Prior Drug Use-The Commission may not certify an applicant to a mandated position if the applicant has within a 12 month period immediately preceding the date of hire, unlawfully used natural cannabis or natural cannabinoids.
Arrest Records-No felony convictions; No misdemeanor convictions within five (5) years; No probations before judgement or parole and probation within five (5) years; Must not currently be on parole or probation; No civil drug convictions within three (3) years.
Driving Records- No convictions or probations before judgement on any 12-point violation within five (5) years. Including but not limited to driving under the influence, driving while intoxicated, attempting to flee/ elude police and/or driving while license is refused / suspended / revoked /canceled.
Academy- Must meet the guidelines for certification by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission.
Military records-No separations less than honorable.

The assessment may consist of a rating of your education, training, and experience related to the requirements of the position.
