What is an entry level UI designer?

Entry level UI designers are professionals who create the visual layout and interactive elements of websites, apps, or software products, typically at the beginning of their careers. They focus on designing user interfaces that are attractive, intuitive, and easy to use, often working under the guidance of more experienced designers. Entry level UI designers use design tools like Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD to create wireframes, prototypes, and final visual designs. Their responsibilities may also include collaborating with UX designers, developers, and other team members to ensure a cohesive user experience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level UI designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level UI Designer, you need a solid understanding of design principles, color theory, typography, and proficiency in tools like Adobe XD, Figma, or Sketch, often supported by a degree or coursework in design. Familiarity with wireframing, prototyping, and basic knowledge of user-centered design processes are typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you collaborate effectively with teams and articulate design choices. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating visually appealing, intuitive interfaces that enhance user experience and meet client or project goals.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level UI designers during their first year on the job?

Entry-level UI Designers often encounter challenges such as balancing creativity with usability standards, adapting to team workflows, and effectively incorporating feedback from developers, product managers, and senior designers. Navigating design tools and keeping up with evolving digital trends can also be daunting at first. However, with mentorship and collaboration, these challenges become valuable learning opportunities, helping new designers build confidence and refine their skills in real-world projects.

Description

About the Role

Meyer Distributing is looking for a talented, high-energy UI/UX Designer to help shape the future of our custom-built e-commerce platform.

This is not a template-driven Shopify role. Our e-commerce experience is designed, developed, and maintained in-house, giving you the opportunity to make a direct and visible impact across a large, complex shopping experience.

Youโ€™ll work closely with software development, merchandising, marketing, and business leadership to design fast, intuitive, conversion-focused experiences across desktop and mobile. Weโ€™re looking for someone who moves quickly, has strong visual instincts, cares about the details, and is comfortable taking ownership from idea through implementation.

What Youโ€™ll Do
  • Design polished, intuitive, conversion-focused experiences across desktop and mobile.
  • Own UX/UI improvements across the full customer journey, including homepage and landing pages; navigation and site search; category and product listing pages; product detail pages; cart and checkout; promotions and merchandising experiences; customer accounts; and order tracking and post-purchase experiences.
  • Turn business goals, customer feedback, and technical requirements into user flows, wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity designs.
  • Build and evolve a scalable design system in Figma, including components, patterns, specifications, and responsive behaviors.
  • Work directly with developers to ensure designs are practical, accurately implemented, and delivered at a high level of quality.
  • Contribute directly to front-end development within our .NET stack, helping translate designs into responsive, productionโ€‘ready interfaces.
  • Partner with merchandising and marketing teams on product launches, promotions, campaigns, and seasonal initiatives.
  • Use analytics, customer feedback, and behavioral data to identify friction points and improve conversion.
  • Participate in design reviews, QA, and postโ€‘launch iteration to ensure the final experience matches the intended design.
  • Help establish a fast, practical design process that improves both customer experience and development speed.
What Weโ€™re Looking For
  • Professional experience designing responsive websites, web applications, or digital products.
  • A strong portfolio that demonstrates thoughtful UX decisions, clean visual design, and realโ€‘world shipped work.
  • Strong proficiency in Figma, including components, libraries, design systems, prototyping, and developer handoff.
  • Required handsโ€‘on development experience in a .NET environment, including ASP.NET and C#.
  • Experience building or contributing to responsive frontโ€‘end interfaces using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and modern UI practices.
  • Familiarity with Angular, React, or comparable frontโ€‘end frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of user flows, interaction design, visual hierarchy, typography, color, and responsive design.
  • Understanding of eโ€‘commerce experiences and how design affects product discovery, purchasing decisions, and conversion.
  • Experience designing for marketing, sales, customer experience, or conversionโ€‘focused digital products is strongly preferred.
  • Understanding of how design supports lead generation, merchandising, customer acquisition, customer retention, and online revenue.
  • Ability to create clear, compelling experiences that balance brand presentation, customer needs, and business performance.
  • Ability to work quickly, accept feedback well, and turn ideas into clear, highโ€‘quality deliverables.
  • Strong communication skills and comfort collaborating directly with both technical and nontechnical teams.
  • A high level of ownership, curiosity, and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing and developing for a custom eโ€‘commerce platform.
  • Experience with large product catalogs, site search, product filtering, or B2B eโ€‘commerce.
  • Experience with usability testing, analytics, A/B testing, heatmaps, or conversionโ€‘rate optimization.
  • Experience with eโ€‘commerce marketing, sales funnels, customer journey optimization, email or campaign landing pages, or customerโ€‘facing selfโ€‘service tools.
  • Experience partnering with sales, marketing, merchandising, or customer service teams to improve the endโ€‘toโ€‘end customer experience.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and responsive design best practices.
  • Experience working in an Agile software development environment.
  • Experience with Git and modern development workflows.
What Success Looks Like
  • Customers can find products, understand product information, and complete purchases more easily.
  • New experiences launch quickly without sacrificing usability, visual quality, or technical feasibility.
  • The eโ€‘commerce experience feels consistent, modern, and easy to use across desktop and mobile.
  • Developers receive clear designs and practical specifications that reduce backโ€‘andโ€‘forth during implementation.
  • The design system becomes a reliable foundation for future features and faster development.
  • Design decisions are supported by customer needs, business goals, analytics, and measurable outcomes.
Why Meyer Distributing

This is a highโ€‘ownership role with the ability to make a meaningful impact on a major eโ€‘commerce platform. You will work directly with an internal development organization and have the freedom to improve the customer experience without being limited by an offโ€‘theโ€‘shelf platform.

If you enjoy moving quickly, building great digital experiences, and seeing your work directly influence a business, this role is an opportunity to do exactly that.

Meyer Distributing is an equal opportunity employer and considers qualified applicants without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected status.
