Apprentice Electrician - Transmission Substation Construction

Headquarters Location: 205 Southfield Parkway, Forest Park, GA. Employees will be assigned to work locations throughout the State of Georgia.

Hiring Note: Georgia Power is anticipating several vacancies and is actively sourcing candidates to begin the hiring process for these positions.

Position Overview

There are multiple openings for Apprentice Electricians supporting the construction of transmission substations throughout Georgia. This role performs hands-on construction, installation, equipment operation, and field support activities in a physically demanding outdoor work environment.

Primary Job Duties

• Welding

• Carpentry

• Heavy equipment and crane operation

• Climbing and working at heights

• Print reading

• Fabrication

• Concrete placement and finishing

• Assembly of structures

• Conduit and cable installation

• Operating commercial vehicles and pulling trailers

• Completion of required apprenticeship training courses

Training Program

Candidates hired as Apprentice Electricians will participate in a comprehensive three- to four-year training program. Candidates with three or more years of substation experience will be evaluated and, based on experience, background, and demonstrated competency, may be placed in an accelerated 12- to 18-month training program.

Work Schedule, Travel, and Conditions

This position is physically demanding and typically follows a four-day, ten-hour work schedule. Overnight and out-of-town stays are required near construction sites, and employees may be away from home up to 200 nights per year on an accumulated, non-consecutive basis.

Per diem payments and travel or lodging expense options are provided through agreements between IBEW Local 84 and Georgia Power Company. These options will be communicated during New Employee Orientation.

This position is covered under the Memorandum of Agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84, which includes pay increases every six months until the maximum compensation rate is reached for the job classification. The position is subject to call-out overtime, scheduled overtime, and storm restoration response. Candidates hired into Section 6A are required to fulfill a two-year obligation to Transmission Construction before becoming eligible to bid outside Section 6, Transmission Construction Organization.

Minimum Qualifications and Preferred Experience

Education

• High School diploma or equivalent

Experience

• It isstrongly preferredcandidates have prior experience in the following:

• Transmission Substation Construction

• Mechanical Experience 

• Industrial construction, maintenance, utility, electrical and/or military

• It is aplusfor candidates to have experience in the following:

• Working outdoors, with heavy equipment / machinery, heavy load rigging / lifting, emergency responders, commercial truck driving, tree trimming, or farming

• General math skills (Addition/Subtraction/Fractions)

• Basic hand and electrical tools

• Tape Measure knowledge

• Carpentry 

• Labor intensive occupations or physically demanding work environment

• Working with tools including but not limited to drills, circular saws, hydraulic presses or other battery powered hand tools

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• A basic mechanical and electrical aptitude or background

• A basic knowledge of hand tools

• Ability to read, understand, and follow procedures, rules, and regulations

• Ability to take instruction, direction and translate thoseinto actions

• Ability to perform physically demanding activities while working outside in all weather conditions

• Exhibited safe work practices as evidenced by a history of working accident and injury free

• Construction machinery such as skid steers, excavators, back hoes, cranes or heavy load rigging and lifting

• Transmission substation equipment and installation work to include bus fabrication, foundation installation, print reading and layout, switch installation, structure grounding or other substation construction skills

Additional Requirements

1. Driver's License and Commercial Driver's License (CDL)

Candidatesmusthave:

• A Commercial Driver's License (CDL)or

• A valid driver's license and be able to attain a CDL within 6 months of employment

Note: Any candidate who holds a current CDL will require verification with current and past employers upon job offer.

2. Pre-Employment Testing

To be considered for an interview, candidates must pass:

• The Construction and Skilled Trades Exam (CAST test).

3. Interview Process

• If invited to interview, candidates will be required to travel to a designated location in Georgia, most likely in the Atlanta area. Candidates will not be paid for time or travel related to pre-employment testing or interviews. Interviews will include questions and an outdoor physical climbing exercise.

4. Prior to Employment

• Pass a Post Offer Evaluation Test 

• Prior to employment, a thorough background check will be conducted (after a job offer is extended).

• You must successfully meet requirements for a Pre-Employment (DOT) physical exam approved by our company physician and Worker's Compensation MedicalQuestionnaire.

• Any offer of employment is contingent upon the applicant successfully completing all required fitness assessments.

5. Weight Restriction

• Because of the nature of our work and weight restrictions on our equipment a candidate must weighandmaintaintheir body weightat or below 325 poundsfully dressed including steel-toed work boots and hardhat.

6. Travel and Working Conditions

• All construction jobs require extended overnight stays and travel throughout the state of Georgia. You could be away from home as many as 200 nights per year accumulative not consecutive. 

• Candidates must be able to frequently work in extreme weather conditions including heat, cold, rain, snow and ice.

Compensation, Training, and Company Information

Pay

• This is a position covered by a collective bargaining agreement between Georgia Power Company and IBEW Local 84. Union membership is optional. Current starting pay is$35.67 per hour and is non-negotiable.

Training and Development

• Apprentice Electricians in Transmission Construction will undergo an extensive training program, including classroom and on-the-job training. The training program lasts approximately 3 years.

• Upon successful completion of the training, the employee is eligible to bid on Electrician positions as they become available.
