The Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology at the University of Utah has an immediate opening for a laboratory technician to join our team of investigators, lab personnel, and GI study coordinators. We are growing a comprehensive Microbiota and GI Immunology Consortia (MAGIC) Biobank for patients who visit our gastroenterology, hepatology and GI surgery clinics, procedures, and operating rooms to advance the field's understanding and improve the care for patients with gastrointestinal diseases with particular emphasis on inflammation and immunology. This position is a part of the growing Microbiota and Gastrointestinal Immunology Consortia (MAGIC) initiative at the University of Utah. For this exciting endeavor we are looking for a laboratory technician to help build and maintain the biorepository. We envision this role to be truly translational, obtaining patient biospecimens and asking clinically and scientifically relevant questions to better our understanding of health and disease.
The individual will coordinate technical and administrative details involved in clinical research studies and assist the Principal Investigator Amiko Uchida, MD in achieving study integrity and objectives through the successful implementation and completion of protocols and procedures. Our biobank uses a sophisticated biorepository system called OpenSpecimen to easily organize and maintain samples and Redcap to survey patients. A competitive candidate for this position will be highly motivated, organized and have excellent communication skills to work with team members, background in bench science with interest in working with other investigators advancing understanding of health and disease using patient biospecimens. The ideal duration of the position is 2 or more years. This position is predominantly in-person; there are select circumstances that permit remote working and must be agreed upon and outlined prior to starting.

Responsibilities
This job description has been designed to indicate the general nature and level of work performed by employees within this classification. Essential Functions
1. Attends and participates in Investigator and staff meetings. Advises team regarding specific study assignments and timelines.
2. Familiar with the process of clinical research coordinator (CRC) biospecimen collection (screening, enrolling and consenting patients)
3. Practices biosafety laboratory skills and execution of workflow protocols with excellent scientific laboratory skills.
4. Makes statistical calculations, analyzes data and prepares reports summarizing results.
5. Quality improvement of workflows, documentation of workflow, organization.
6. Conducts literature reviews to obtain abstracts and information to be utilized in research.
7. Performs tests and procedures using laboratory equipment.
8. Monitors and assists with purchasing of laboratory supplies and materials.
9. Maintain records for biospecimens.
Incumbents are responsible for coordinating the daily operations of their assigned research team, coordinating the orderly and safe flow of research projects, and maintaining adequate resources for the PI to accomplish their research objectives.

Laboratory Technician, I

Perform quality control testing and inspection of raw materials, formulas, and ingredients within a laboratory environment to meet current quality standards. Maintain documentation of tests, interpret results, and prepare reports. Perform entry-level laboratory tests, experiments, and analyses. Prepare and weigh samples for testing and analysis. Conduct tests, assays, and other protocols under the direction of a laboratory services manager, physician, nurse, or scientist. Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs). Ensure all laboratory equipment and work areas are clean, sterile, and in proper working order. Troubleshoot, calibrate, and perform preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment. Entry-level support role. Perform routine tasks as directed and under close supervision.
