We are looking for a dependable and analytical Underwriter I to support the review and decisioning of merchant applications. This role will evaluate business information, credit and financial documentation, and other risk factors to make sound decisions within established guidelines.

The ideal candidate has strong attention to detail, good judgment, and experience in merchant services, banking, credit, or a related financial environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review merchant applications to evaluate credit, financial, operational, and compliance risk
  • Interpret consumer and business credit reports, corporate registrations, bank statements, financial statements, tax returns, processing statements, and other supporting documents
  • Verify the accuracy and completeness of information provided on merchant applications
  • Complete business verification and additional research using internal tools and third-party resources
  • Approve, pend, decline, or escalate applications based on company policies
  • Assign appropriate merchant risk ratings and document the reasoning behind underwriting decisions
  • Clearly communicate pending requirements and follow up on outstanding information
  • Respond to questions from agents, sales representatives, merchants, and internal departments
  • Identify inconsistencies, potential fraud indicators, and emerging risk trends
  • Navigate multiple systems to review, update, and track application statuses
  • Maintain complete and accurate underwriting notes and documentation
  • Perform additional duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to identify missing or inconsistent information
  • Good analytical, research, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to review information objectively and make decisions within established guidelines
  • Ability to manage a high-volume application queue while meeting accuracy and turnaround expectations
  • Strong organization and time-management skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to clearly communicate application requirements and request additional documentation
  • Comfortable reviewing credit reports, bank statements, business records, and other financial documents
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat
  • Ability to learn proprietary CRM platforms and third-party underwriting systems
  • Ability to calculate percentages, processing volumes, average tickets, and other basic underwriting-related figures

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Previous experience in merchant services, banking, lending, credit, fraud prevention, risk, financial services, or a related field preferred
  • Merchant underwriting experience is helpful but not required
  • Experience reviewing applications, financial documents, customer accounts, or business information preferred
  • Experience working in a detail-oriented, production-based, or queue-driven environment preferred
  • Experience using TSYS or other payment-processing systems is a plus

SALARY:

This role includes biannual profit-sharing bonuses as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, dental, retirement planning, and/or other benefits.

  • Base salary range: $50,000 - $60,000
  • Salary including quarterly profit-sharing bonus and comprehensive benefits program range (annualized): $67,725 - $79,725
