Job description

This Opportunity

WSP is currently initiating a search for an On-call Entry Level Survey Technician for our Columbus, OH office. Be involved in projects with our Oil and Gas Team and be a part of a growing organization that meets our client's objectives and solves their challenges. 

This position is to support crew chief in collecting accurate field data for topographic design surveys, construction staking, and utility surveys. The ideal candidate is dependable, eager to learn, enjoys working outdoors, and is committed to safety and hard work.    

Your Impact

  • Act as the on-site representative for WSP
  • Attend a Job Hazard Analysis Meeting every morning with field crew.
  • Locate and probe existing company gas lines.
  • Conduct topographical survey gathering data on all major terrain features.
  • Take field notes of field data gathered.
  • Interface with landowners and refer any landowner questions, concerns or issues to the appropriate Sr. Surveyors and/or client representative.
  • Brush Clearing
  • Complete training on assigned tasks, as needed.
  • Work collaboratively with other professionals, engineers, scientists, project control, and technicians on assigned survey tasks.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures which include but are not limited to, location data, statistical documentation, studies and surveys, and construction.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Who You Are

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma.
  • Valid state driver's license.
  • Previous survey experience a plus but not required.
  • Good interpersonal, documentation, and computer skills (Outlook, Word, and Excel).
  • Willing to learn and retain basic principles of pipeline design surveys, construction staking, and as-built surveys.
  • Ability to record information in a legible and accurate manner. (Field Notes)
  • Professional oral and written communication skills.
  • Sound self-leadership with attention to detail, accuracy, multi-tasking, and prioritization of responsibilities in a dynamic work environment.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as part of a team to meet business objectives.
  • Analytical mindset to exercise sound judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills required to apply technical knowledge to reach conclusions from calculations, data collation, and survey results to arrive at the most effective and logical solution.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Ability to work schedules conducive to project-specific requirements that may extend beyond the typical workweek.
  • Travel is required, up to 90%, depending on project-specific requirements.
  • Must successfully complete and pass WSP's Motor Vehicle screening.
  • This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employees may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.
