Job description

Job Summary

The Utility Technician is responsible for performing a variety of field and technical tasks related to all phases of private locating, Pre-design locating, Subsurface Utility Engineering, and Video Pipe Inspections. This position involves the operation of different electronic detection equipment, to locate and mark under-ground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits safely and efficiently.

Job Functions

  1. Aid in training efforts for staff in operations, policies and technical procedures.
  2. Creates, leads and trains in safety procedures to staff in operations.
  3. Read and interpret utility maps/prints to identify the type and size of underground utilities.
  4. Use assigned communication equipment to effectively communicate with excavators, utility reps, and company personnel regarding underground facilities.
  5. Operate different electronic detection equipment, to locate and mark under-ground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits.
  6. Provide accurate documentation and/or sketches related to all locates completed.
  7. Operate company vehicles in a safe manner and maintain a professional appearance.
  8. Be able to perform manhole entry using assigned equipment and safety devices.
  9. Perform work in all weather conditions.
  10. Requires broad based knowledge of all phases of private locating, Pre-design locating, Subsurface Utility Engineering, and Video Pipe Inspections.
  11. Assists in providing insight into identifying and utilizing correct technology, equipment and tools needed for the department.
  12. Attend Groundhawk Team EOS
  13. Perform light excavation with a shovel to expose buried utilities when necessary.
  14. Receive and respond to excavation notices in accordance with established time requirements.
  15. Operate company vehicles in a safe manner and maintain a professional appearance.
  16. Follow all safety rules.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  1. High school diploma or GED required; technical training in utilities, construction, or engineering preferred.
  2. Minimum 2 years of experience as a Utility Locating Technician, preferably in Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE).
  3. Experience working in the field, preferably for a company of similar or larger scale.
  4. Demonstrated stability in work history (no frequent job changes preferred).

Licenses & Certifications

  1. CDL License is a plus.
  2. NASSCO Certification is a plus.
  3. GPR experience and Private Utility Locating experience are highly desirable.

Skills & Abilities

  1. Proficiency in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scanning and interpretation.
  2. Strong understanding of Subsurface Utility Engineering (SUE) techniques.
  3. Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  4. Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and safety.
  5. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
