Job Title: Substation Engineer

Job Description

As a Substation Engineer, you will join a dynamic team of power professionals focused on designing and delivering high-voltage substation projects across the country. You will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and project managers to develop technical designs, perform calculations, and support project execution from concept to construction.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in the design of high-voltage substations (69kV to 500kV), including physical layout, protection and control systems, grounding, and civil/structural elements.
  • Prepare detailed engineering drawings.
  • Perform electrical calculations such as short circuit, load flow, voltage drop, and grounding analysis.
  • Support development of one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, schematics, and wiring diagrams.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to integrate structural, civil, and environmental aspects into substation designs.
  • Prepare technical specifications, bill of materials, and construction packages.
  • Assist in writing engineering reports, design narratives, and client deliverables.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and adhere to quality control standards.
  • Participate in project meetings with clients, utilities, and internal stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with other engineering disciplines (civil, structural, environmental) to ensure cohesive project execution.
  • Communicate effectively with experienced engineers and project managers to receive mentorship and feedback.
  • Engage in on-the-job training and formal learning opportunities to build technical expertise.
  • Stay current with industry standards (IEEE, NESC, NEC) and utility requirements.
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET Accredited program.
  • MUST have taken courses in Power Systems Analysis, Power Systems Protection, Energy Delivery Systems, and Power Labs
  • Experience with AutoCAD and/or Microstation.
  • Familiarity with the NEC and National Electrical Safety Code.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • 3D Modeling experience (Revit, Civil 3D, Inventor, etc) is a plus.
  • Knowledge of construction practices and constructability.
  • Experience with proposal writing and project estimating.
  • Working knowledge of scheduling and project controls processes.
  • EIT Certification or Master's Engineering Degree is a plus.
  • Good knowledge of industry and technology trends specific to substations.

Work Environment

You will be part of a team of 20 engineers, designers, and drafters located in Lake Mary, FL, north of Orlando. The team is relocating to a bigger office in Lake Mary, estimated Oct-Nov. There is strong encouragement to obtain your EIT/PE under the direction of PEs.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.65 - $38.46/hr.
