Job description

Job Title: Sterile Processing Supervisor
Department: Sterile Processing Department
Location: Rochester General Hospital
Hours Per Week: 40
Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8 hour shifts, Rotated weekends/holidays 0700-1630

Position Summary: This is a working supervisor position reporting to the manager of the Sterile Processing Center (SPC). Responsibilities include planning, organizing and coordinating the day‑to‑day operations of SPC, the care, preparation and maintenance of surgical instruments, equipment and supplies. Serves as a key contact and resource for Operating Room questions and issues. Ensures adherence to The Joint Commission (TJC) and State Board of Health regulations. Supervises daily activities of assigned staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Organizes and coordinates the day‑to‑day operations of SPC, including care, preparation and maintenance of surgical instruments, equipment and supplies.
  • Ensures operational compliance with legal, regulatory and institutional requirements by following procedures and standards of quality for decontamination, preparation, sterilization, storage and distribution of surgical instruments, supplies and equipment.
  • Reviews and evaluates, on an ongoing basis, the flow of work through the Main SPC and SPC‑OR areas; identifies areas where operational efficiencies need improvement.
  • Ensures instruments and equipment are in good working order and facilitates repair or replacement as appropriate.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate levels of instrumentation and facilitates replacement as necessary.
  • Assists with maintaining an effective cost control and inventory control system; maintains inventory supply levels and prepares requisitions for additional supplies and equipment.
  • Assists with recruiting, hiring, evaluating, coaching and, if necessary, disciplining assigned staff.
  • Evaluates the quality and quantity of work performed by SPC Technicians; provides input to the Manager for performance appraisals.
  • Supports SPC staff with scheduling the workload; communicates with the Manager regarding concerns or problems reported by staff.
  • Interprets, enforces and supports Hospital and department policies, procedures, and protocols.
  • Maintains open communications with other Hospital departments that interface with Sterile Processing (e.g., Operating Room, Nursing Units, Administrative Clinical Leaders).
  • Maintains sterilization testing records for Sterile Processing.
  • Maintains and distributes hazard communication information in the department as appropriate.
  • Maintains open communications with Operating Room staff, Infection Control practitioners, Engineering and Environmental Services departments.
  • Assists in the development, implementation and evaluation of a Quality Assurance program; involves team members.
  • Attends in‑services and department meetings; participates in continuing education and attends conferences as approved.
  • Reads current professional literature and journals.
  • Maintains professional affiliations as appropriate.
  • Coordinates with purchasing/Central Stores regarding inventory supplies in backorder/stock‑out situations.
  • Coordinates with end‑user departments to review product additions and deletions; assists in transition process of product conversion.
  • Completes other job‑related duties and special projects as assigned.
  • Performs the functions of a Sterile Processing Technician as needed.
Preferred Responsibilities
  • Minimum one year of supervisory experience preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum 15 months of experience as a sterile processing technician.
Required Licensure/Certification Skills
  • CRCST certification (Certified Registered Central Service Technician).
Physical Requirements
  • Heavy Work – Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects; requires constant walking, standing or squatting.
  • For disease‑specific care programs refer to the program specific requirements of the department for further specifications on experience and educational expectations, including continuing education requirements; any physical requirements reported by a prospective employee and/or employee’s physician or delegate will be considered for accommodations.
