Job description
Business Development Representative (Entry Level)
CNWR IT Consultants. Toledo, OH. Full time, in office. $20/hour plus commission.
First, the honest part
This is a phone job. You will make 50 to 70 calls a day, most of them will go nowhere, and some people will be short with you when they pick up. We would rather tell you that now than have you find it out in week three.
Here is the other half. Cold calling is one of the better ways to start a sales career, and almost nobody bothers to teach it properly anymore. We will. That skill tends to travel well, too, because a person who can start a conversation with a stranger who did not ask to hear from them is useful in basically every sales job that exists.
What you would actually do
We sell IT and cybersecurity to manufacturers and small businesses around Northwest Ohio. Your job is to find the ones who need us and get them talking.
- Work a list of local companies we have already researched. You are not staring at a blank page wondering who to call.
- Get people on the phone, ask decent questions, and figure out whether they have a problem worth solving.
- Book a 15 minute intro call for our sales lead. That is the whole win condition, and everything else on this list exists to support it.
- Send follow up emails under your own name, not a marketing blast.
- Keep our CRM honest. Bad data is worse than no data, because we actually make decisions on it.
You will not be writing proposals, building quotes, or closing deals. Not at first. Your job is to start conversations and get very good at it.
Who we are looking for
No sales experience required. We mean that literally and not as a recruiting softener, because we would rather teach you our way than un-teach you somebody else's.
- You compete with yourself. Last week's number bugs you a little.
- You can call a stranger without rehearsing for ten minutes first.
- You take coaching without taking it personally. Honestly, this one matters more than natural talent does.
- You are organized enough to work a list and write down what happened.
- You show up. Consistency is the name of the game.
If you have worked retail, waited tables, sat in a call center, or played a sport at any level, you already have most of what we need. The rest is learnable, and teaching it is our problem, not yours.
What it pays
- $20.00 an hour, which comes out to $41,600 a year
- $40 every time a meeting you booked actually happens
- $100 when one of those prospects becomes a customer
- Benefits, PTO, and paid holidays
Hitting steady state numbers should put somewhere around $400 to $700 a month on top of your base, and there is no cap on it. Notice we pay on meetings that happen rather than meetings that get booked. That is deliberate. We want real conversations, not calendar entries, and paying on the wrong one of those teaches the wrong habit.
Where this goes
We are not hiring a seat filler. This role is the front door to our sales team, and the plan is for whoever takes it to outgrow it.
Do this well for 12 to 18 months and the next step is running your own accounts, your own territory, and your own deals, with real commission attached. That growth is earned rather than scheduled, and we will tell you on day one exactly what earned looks like so you are not guessing. For what it is worth, we would much rather promote you than run this ad again.
How we will train you
You will not get handed a phone list and a good luck. Your first weeks are spent educating you on our business and our process before you start making calls, because it is hard to ask a good question about something you do not understand yet.
From there, your first 60 days run at a deliberately lower call volume, 30 to 40 a day, while you learn the industry, the questions that matter, and why a plant manager should care about any of this. You will do call reviews and role play with your manager every week to start, then as needed once you find your footing. That feedback exists for continuous improvement rather than judgement, and you will listen in on real calls before you ever make your own.
Your manager came into this job without a sales background herself, so she has a fairly specific list of things she found helpful for this role. She built the training you will get.
About CNWR
We are a Toledo IT and cybersecurity company. Manufacturers and small businesses across Northwest Ohio hand us their technology so they can go run their actual business, and when something breaks at 2am we are who they call.
Our core values are not wall art. We hire against them, and occasionally we part ways over them.
- Have a Firefighter Mentality
- Do What's Right
- Be the Rising Tide
- Be Human
- Own the Problem. Drive the Solution, Together
- Always Seek Improvement
How to apply
Apply here. Then call (419) 558-5367 and leave a 60 second voicemail with your name and why you think you would be good at this.
Yes, that is a test. It is a phone job, so we would like to hear you on a phone before we bring you in, and there is no trick to it beyond picking up and talking. Applications with a voicemail go to the top of the pile, and we listen to every one of them.
CNWR IT Consultants is an equal opportunity employer.
