SALARY: Hiring Salary $49,140 annually with full benefits package
DESCRIPTION OF WORK: Environmental health professionals promote and protect public health by enforcing state and local environmental health laws and regulations through education, surveillance, consultation, and inspections. Responsibilities include conducting inspections and issuing permits for land use and subsurface wastewater disposal systems. This role requires close collaboration with health department staff, state and county officials, facility operators, contractors, property owners, and the general public to ensure compliance with environmental health standards. Decisions made in this position directly affect the health and safety of individuals and communities. Additionally, these decisions can have significant financial impacts on businesses, property owners, and contractors, requiring sound judgment, regulatory knowledge, and professional integrity.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of environmental health laws, rules, and procedures, as well as a complete understanding of the concepts of public health law. Practical knowledge of microbiology, biology, chemistry, food science, epidemiology, soil science, entomology, and basic engineering technology as applied to environmental health practices. Working knowledge of the interrelationship between socio-economic factors and environmental health concerns, design of on-site wastewater treatment systems, communicable diseases, vector control, protection of water supplies, solid waste management, and institutional sanitation, inspection methods and investigation techniques as applied in environmental health.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree or postgraduate degree from a program that is accredited by the National Environmental Health Science and Protection Accreditation Council (EHAC); or, Bachelor's degree or postgraduate degree in public health and one year of experience in the field of environmental health practice; or Bachelor's degree or postgraduate degree with a minimum of 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in the physical, biological, natural, life, or health sciences and one year of experience in the field of environmental health practice. Appointee must be eligible for registration and apply for registration as an Environmental Health Specialist Intern within 60 days of employment. Employee may remain registered as an Environmental Health Specialist Intern until registration as an Environmental Health Specialist or up to two years, whichever comes first.
