What is an entry level software job?

Entry level software jobs are positions designed for individuals who are new to the software industry, typically requiring little to no prior professional experience. These roles often include titles like Junior Software Developer, Software Engineer I, or Software Intern, and focus on basic coding, testing, and debugging tasks under supervision. Entry level software professionals work closely with more experienced engineers to build their skills and gain familiarity with software development processes, tools, and best practices. These jobs usually require a foundational understanding of programming languages and may require a degree in computer science or related fields.

What kinds of projects and tasks can an entry level software developer expect to work on?

Entry-level software developers typically start by working on smaller features, bug fixes, or assisting with code maintenance under the supervision of more experienced team members. You'll often participate in code reviews, write unit tests, and gradually take on more complex assignments as you build your skills. Collaboration is common, so expect to work closely with other developers, testers, and sometimes product managers. Over time, you'll gain exposure to the full software development lifecycle and have opportunities to contribute to larger projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Software Engineer, you generally need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C++), algorithms, and data structures, often supported by a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic software development tools, and sometimes relevant certifications (such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Fundamentals) is helpful. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and a willingness to learn make candidates stand out in this position. These skills and qualities are crucial for writing effective code, collaborating with teams, and adapting to evolving project requirements.

We are looking for a motivated Software Engineer I to join our data team! In this role, you will help build, maintain, and support our core data warehouse solutions on Google Cloud Platform (GCP). You will collaborate closely with data analysts and business stakeholders to translate reporting requests into clean data models and Looker dashboards. This is an entry-level position perfect for a self-starter who possesses strong foundational SQL skills, an eye for business analysis, and sharp attention to detail. • Business Analysis & Collaboration: Partner with analysts and business stakeholders to understand their data and reporting needs, translating those requirements into clean, structured tables and views.
  • Business Intelligence: Build, manage, and optimize Looker dashboards and reports, ensuring business users can easily access actionable data.
  • Data Quality & Attention to Detail: Ensure data integrity and consistency across data marts by writing validation queries and row-count checks to catch discrepancies early.
  • Pipeline Monitoring: Help monitor and maintain basic Apache Airflow (Cloud Composer) DAGs written in Python, ensuring daily data loads run smoothly.
  • Performance Basics: Learn and apply standard query optimization techniques, including BigQuery partitioning and clustering best practices.

Job Requirements:

  • Foundational SQL Skills: Strong command of SQL (joins, aggregations, and familiarity with window functions).
  • Data Warehouse Exposure: A solid conceptual understanding of relational databases, ETL/ELT concepts, and standard data warehousing structures (tables, views, and data lakes).
  • BI / Looker Experience: Hands-on experience or academic exposure to building dashboards in Looker (or similar BI tools like Tableau/PowerBI).
  • Basic Python & Git: Familiarity with Python for basic scripting/automation and comfort using Git for version control.
  • The Mindset (Self-Starter): A proactive learner who takes initiative to solve problems and figures out how things work.
  • Analytical Nature: The ability to look at a business problem, analyze the underlying data requirements, and implement a structured solution.
  • Attention to Detail: Deep care for data quality-you are someone who double-checks your query results and takes pride in data accuracy.
