What does an Entry Level Software Test Engineer do?

An Entry Level Software Test Engineer is responsible for testing software applications to ensure they work as intended and meet quality standards. They create and execute test cases, report bugs, and collaborate with developers to resolve issues. Their work helps improve software reliability and user experience. Entry-level roles typically involve learning about testing tools, methodologies, and working under the guidance of more experienced engineers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Software Test Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Software Test Engineer, you need a solid understanding of software development life cycles, basic programming concepts, and a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with testing tools like Selenium, JIRA, and test case management systems, as well as knowledge of scripting languages, is typically required. Job description

Boston, MA

Full-time position

Role Overview

Detail-oriented, hands-on Software & Systems Integration Testers to execute our comprehensive quality assurance plans. Operating at the intersection of software and physical robotics test organization. Working directly under the guidance of the Lead SW SDET and Lead HW HDE, you will run complex system tests, operate physical test fixtures, and meticulously document how our hardware and software interact in the real world.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Test Execution: Execute daily manual and automated test cases (HIL, SIL, and system-level) exactly as defined by the Lead SW and HW Engineers.
  • Hardware Operations: Physically operate robotics platforms and test fixtures. Flash firmware, power cycle devices, and ensure lab equipment is correctly staged for EVT/DVT testing.
  • Meticulous Bug Reporting: Identify, isolate, and document system failures. Capture critical data including software logs, core dumps, and physical evidence (photos/videos) of hardware behavior to help engineering teams root-cause issues.
  • Feedback Loop: Provide clear, real-time feedback to the SW/HW leads on test execution blockers, or inaccuracies in test documentation.

Key Qualifications

  • Testing Experience: Prior experience in a QA, technician, or system test role—ideally working with integrated hardware/software products (robotics, IoT, automotive, or consumer electronics).
  • Technical Comfort: Comfortable navigating Linux command-line environments, executing Python/Bash scripts, and extracting log files.
  • Hands-On Aptitude: Comfortable handling, cabling, and operating physical hardware prototypes and lab test fixtures.
  • Detail-Oriented: Highly methodical with strong written communication skills for creating clear, reproducible bug reports
