Job description

Position Summary

The PCR Lab Technician is responsible for the accurate and timely processing, preparation, analysis, and documentation of urine laboratory specimens. This role performs molecular laboratory testing, including DNA extraction and qPCR procedures, while maintaining compliance with CLIA regulations, accreditation standards, and laboratory quality management requirements.

The PCR Lab Technician ensures specimen integrity, maintains laboratory equipment, supports quality assurance initiatives, documents laboratory activities, and contributes to the overall efficiency and effectiveness of laboratory operations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Clinical Laboratory Testing

  • Collect, prepare, and evaluate patient specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Perform technical laboratory procedures with accuracy, precision, and attention to quality standards.
  • Conduct DNA extraction and qPCR testing procedures.
  • Verify specimen integrity and ensure appropriate handling throughout the testing process.
  • Recognize unusual patient results and identify potential analytical issues requiring investigation.
  • Troubleshoot assays, instrumentation, and laboratory processes when performance concerns arise.
  • Maintain accurate specimen records and testing documentation.

Laboratory Equipment & Operations

  • Operate laboratory instruments and equipment according to established procedures.
  • Perform routine maintenance and quality checks on laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain instrument logs and technical records.
  • Ensure laboratory cleanliness and adherence to safety standards.
  • Follow established laboratory standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Assist in developing, updating, and maintaining SOPs and laboratory documentation.

Quality Assurance & Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with CLIA regulations, accreditation requirements, and laboratory quality standards.
  • Support laboratory quality management activities and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Identify quality concerns that may impact test accuracy, patient safety, or laboratory operations.
  • Communicate quality issues promptly and assist with corrective actions.
  • Participate in inspections, audits, proficiency testing, and licensure-related activities.
  • Maintain records necessary for regulatory compliance and accreditation readiness.

Documentation & Record Management

  • Accurately document laboratory testing activities, equipment maintenance, and quality control procedures.
  • Maintain organized records of specimens, test results, instrument maintenance, and laboratory analyses.
  • Support administrative laboratory functions as required.
  • Ensure documentation meets organizational, regulatory, and accreditation standards.

Collaboration & Professional Development Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Laboratory Science, or related field required.
  • MLS (ASCP) certification required.

Experience

  • One to three years of laboratory experience preferred.
  • Prior clinical laboratory experience preferred.
  • Experience with molecular diagnostic testing, DNA extraction, and PCR methodologies preferred.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Knowledge of molecular laboratory procedures and laboratory quality systems.
  • Strong understanding of CLIA and laboratory regulatory requirements.
