Job description

For more than 70 years, Border Paving Ltd. has played a key role in building and maintaining Alberta's infrastructure. From highways and roadways to complex construction projects, our reputation has been built on quality workmanship, safety and strong relationships with our customers and the communities we work in.   

The GPS Machine Control & Survey Coordinator supports earthworks are road construction operations by operating heavy equipment and using Trimble GPS machine control systems. This role works closely with field crews on grading, machine control set up and daily construction activities on site.

We are looking for a motivated and dependable individual with equipment operating experience, mechanical aptitude and an interest in construction technology. The successful candidate will be willing to learn, work well in a team environment and adapt to changing project needs in the field.

Job Responsibilities

  • Operate in a team setting with a positive attitude and character of a strong leader
  • Use Trimble GPS machine control to oversee grading, site layout and surveying activities
  • Set up, troubleshoot and maintain GPS/survey control equipment in the field
  • Maintain survey and machine control equipment inventory; keep software updates current
  • Promote and support internal growth initiative of increased use of machine control
  • Liaise with all BPL survey staff to have reliable consistency of machine control infrastructure
  • Review and modify third party surface files to ensure field operations are productive
  • Ability to field-fit to accommodate constructability when discrepancies arise
  • Oversee material and pay quantity checks based on field survey measurements
  • Upload and maintain project files, surfaces and machine control data to facilitate field operations
  • Perform grade checks and verify elevations
  • Read and interpret construction drawings, grading plans and site layouts
  • Work closely with supervisors, operators and field crews throughout daily operations
  • Proficiency in drone-based survey and associated requirements/regulations of drone piloting
  • Follow all company safety policies and procedures
  • Perform other duties to support field operations

Qualifications

  • Experience supporting heavy equipment in construction, earthworks or roadbuilding preferred, specifically pertaining to machine control and survey software
  • Experience with Trimble machine control systems, GPS equipment or related construction technology considered an asset
  • Ability to train survey and field operations staff on all matters pertaining to machine control
  • Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Geomatics, Surveying Technology or related field
  • Equivalent combinations of education and relevant experience will be considered
  • Mechanically inclined and interested in construction technology
  • Ability to work independently and in team environments
  • Strong problem solving and communication skills
  • Willingness to learn
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License
