Entry Level Software Developer Part Time information

What is an entry level software developer part time?

An Entry Level Software Developer Part Time job is a role for individuals with little to no professional experience in software development, working fewer hours than a full-time position. These developers assist in coding, debugging, testing, and maintaining software applications under the guidance of senior team members. The position is ideal for students, recent graduates, or those looking to gain hands-on experience while balancing other commitments. Responsibilities may vary depending on the company but typically involve learning and contributing to programming tasks. It’s a great opportunity to develop technical skills and build a foundation for a full-time software development career.

What does an entry level software developer part time do?

As an Entry Level Software Developer working part time, your daily tasks may include writing and testing code, fixing bugs, participating in team meetings, and collaborating with senior developers on ongoing projects. You may also assist with documentation, code reviews, and occasionally research new technologies or tools as guided by your team. The workload is designed to be manageable within part-time hours, giving you opportunities to apply what you've learned and build valuable experience. This hands-on exposure allows you to gradually take on more complex tasks and develop your programming skills in a supportive environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the entry level software developer part time position, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Software Developer Part Time, a solid understanding of programming fundamentals, basic algorithms, and familiarity with languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript is essential, typically demonstrated through a relevant degree or completed coursework. Experience with version control systems such as Git, code editors like VS Code, and foundational knowledge of databases are commonly required technical assets. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, effective communication, and the ability to work well both independently and as part of a team help candidates excel in this role. These skills and qualities are critical for tackling real-world coding challenges, adapting to feedback, and contributing positively to development projects.

Job description

We are a certified channel partner for Infinite Campus, the K-12 student information system used by school districts across the country. Our team builds add-on products, custom integrations, and tailored reporting solutions that extend Infinite Campus for the districts we serve. We are hiring two Software Developer Interns to join our team for a 10-12 week summer program. Interns will work alongside our developers on real client-facing projects - supporting Java-based add-ons, writing custom SSRS reports, and manipulating data out of MS SQL Server. What they work on over the summer directly impacts school districts and gets used by the educators and administrators there.

Hourly Rate: $20/hour

What You'll Do:

  • Write and optimize T-SQL queries, stored procedures, and views against MS SQL Server
  • Develop and maintain Java-based add-on products that extend Infinite Campus functionality
  • Write custom reports using SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS) based on district requirements
  • Work with senior developers to translate client requests into technical specifications
  • Test, debug, and document your work so it's ready to hand off to clients
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned

What You Bring:

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field - recent grads and those graduating soon are encouraged to apply
  • Solid Java fundamentals - classes, interfaces, collections, exception handling
  • Working knowledge of SQL; comfortable writing JOINs, aggregations, and basic stored procedures
  • Strong attention to detail - our clients are school districts, and accuracy in reporting matters
  • Clear written communication for documenting work and interacting with the team
  • A genuine passion for learning - eager to pick up new tools, ask questions, and grow through hands-on work
  • Working conditions: part-time role, 20 hours per week, on-site in Hauppauge, NY; 10-12 week engagement beginning around May 2026
  • Preferred: experience with SSRS or any other reporting tool (Crystal Reports, Power BI, Tableau)
  • Preferred: exposure to MS SQL Server specifically (vs. MySQL/Postgres); familiarity with REST APIs or web services
  • Preferred: any background in or curiosity about K-12 education, edtech, or student information systems; or prior internship, co-op, or substantial personal project experience
