What does an entry level ship broker do?

An entry level ship broker acts as an intermediary between ship owners and charterers or buyers and sellers of ships. Their main duties include assisting with negotiations, gathering market information, preparing contracts, and supporting senior brokers with administrative tasks. They often handle communications, maintain databases, and help match ships with cargo or clients. This role is an introduction to the maritime shipping industry and provides valuable experience in international trade and logistics.

What are some typical challenges an entry level ship broker may face when starting out?

Entry Level Ship Brokers often face challenges such as building a network of reliable contacts and understanding the complexities of shipping contracts and negotiations. Navigating industry jargon, keeping up with market trends, and managing multiple client requests simultaneously can also be demanding. However, many companies provide mentorship and on-the-job training to help new brokers develop their skills and expertise. Proactive communication and a willingness to learn are key to overcoming these initial hurdles and progressing within the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level ship broker, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Ship Broker, you generally need strong negotiation skills, commercial awareness, and a background in shipping, business, or finance, often supported by a relevant degree or maritime training. Excellent communication, relationship-building, and organizational abilities help you stand out in this client-driven environment. Angel Oak Mortgage Solutions LLC | Full-Time | Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Are you detail-oriented, organized, and ready to start your career in the mortgage industry? Angel Oak Mortgage Solutions LLC is looking for an entry-level Collateral Intake Specialist to join our team. In this role, you will help support our post-closing operations by reviewing, tracking, and organizing important loan documents to ensure they are accurate, complete, and delivered on time. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working with documents, solving problems, and learning how the mortgage process works from the inside, with opportunities to build new skills and grow within the company over time.

About the Role

The Collateral Intake Specialist is responsible for receiving, reviewing, tracking, and distributing loan collateral and trailing documents. This role supports the post-closing team and warehouse bank requirements by helping ensure documents are complete, accurate, and handled within required timelines. We are willing to train the right candidate who brings strong attention to detail, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn. As you gain experience, this position offers exposure to different parts of the mortgage process and opportunities to grow into additional responsibilities within the team.

What You’ll Do

  • Review loan documents for completeness and accuracy.
  • Track incoming closing packages and follow up when documents are missing or delayed.
  •   Help prepare and organize notes, allonges, and collateral documentation for shipment.
  • Communicate with internal teams and external partners to help resolve document questions or issues.
  • Ship notes and collateral documents to warehouse banks according to established procedures.
  • Process trailing documents and ensure they are delivered accurately and on time.
  • Maintain organized records and support the team with other post-closing tasks as needed.

What We’re Looking For

  •   Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
  •   Ability to stay organized and manage multiple tasks during the day.
  •   Clear written and verbal communication skills.
  •   Comfort working with documents, data entry, and computer systems.
  •   Basic Microsoft Word and Excel skills.
  •   A dependable, team-oriented attitude and willingness to learn.
  •   Previous office, administrative, customer service, or document-processing experience is helpful but not required.
  •   Mortgage, post-closing, or Encompass experience is a plus, but we will train motivated entry-level candidates.
