Kitchen Hood Suppression Technician
Department: FPS
Reports To: Service Manager / Operations ManagerLocation: Basalt, Colorado
Employment Type: Full-Time, Field-Based
Position Summary
The Kitchen Hood Suppression Technician is responsible for inspecting, testing, servicing, repairing, and installing commercial kitchen fire suppression systems in accordance with NFPA standards, manufacturer specifications, and local fire codes. This role plays a critical part in ensuring life safety and property protection for restaurants, commercial kitchens, and institutional food service operations.
Key Responsibilities
Inspection, Testing & Maintenance
  • Conduct routine inspections and maintenance of kitchen hood fire suppression systems per NFPA 17A, NFPA 96, and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Perform functional testing of detection devices, actuation mechanisms, and suppression agent discharge systems.
  • Replace or recharge system components including fusible links, nozzles, and cylinders as needed.
  • Document inspection results and note any deficiencies.
Repairs & Installation
  • Diagnose and repair malfunctioning kitchen suppression systems.
  • Install new kitchen hood suppression systems in accordance with design specifications and code requirements.
  • Upgrade or retrofit existing systems to meet current safety standards.
Customer Service
  • Communicate clearly with customers regarding inspection results, system condition, and any necessary repairs.
  • Provide professional recommendations for system improvements or replacements.
  • Obtain customer approvals for work performed.
Compliance & Documentation
  • Maintain accurate inspection reports, service tickets, and repair logs.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable NFPA standards, AHJ requirements, and company policies.
  • Coordinate with local fire inspectors when required for acceptance testing.
Safety & Professionalism
  • Adhere to OSHA and company safety procedures while working in the field.
  • Maintain company-provided tools, test equipment, and service vehicles in good condition.
  • Stay current with code changes, new products, and industry best practices through ongoing training.

Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in fire protection systems preferred.
  • Minimum 1-2 years of experience in kitchen hood suppression system inspection, installation, or service (preferred but not required for entry-level candidates with training).
Certifications
  • Manufacturer certifications for kitchen suppression systems (e.g., Ansul, Kidde, Range Guard, Pyro-Chem) highly preferred.
  • State or local fire suppression license (if applicable).
  • OSHA 10 or 30 safety certification desirable.
Skills & Competencies
  • Knowledge of NFPA 17, NFPA 17A, NFPA 96, and applicable local codes.
  • Ability to read and interpret system drawings and schematics.
  • Mechanical aptitude and strong troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication and customer service abilities.
  • Basic computer skills for service reporting and documentation.

Physical & Work Environment Requirements
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in tight or elevated spaces.
  • Work in commercial kitchen environments and on active construction sites.
  • Willingness to work overtime, travel to job sites, and participate in on-call rotation.
