Role Summary

The DevOps Engineer supports reliable software delivery by helping maintain and improve CI/CD workflows, automation, and operational practices. This is an entry-level position: success is measured by learning quickly, executing well-defined tasks, improving documentation, and contributing to team reliability with guidance from senior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support build, deployment, and configuration management activities for applications and services.
  • Assist with CI/CD pipeline upkeep (e.g., troubleshooting pipeline failures, improving pipeline reliability, and documenting pipeline usage).
  • Help implement and maintain automation for routine operational tasks (e.g., environment setup, deploy steps, basic health checks).
  • Participate in incident response as appropriate for level, following runbooks and escalating when needed; contribute to post-incident follow-ups by updating documentation.
  • Support monitoring and alerting hygiene (e.g., alert tuning suggestions, dashboard updates, basic log/metric validation) under direction.
  • Maintain internal documentation as a standard part of day-to-day work (runbooks, SOPs, troubleshooting guides, and deployment documentation).
  • Collaborate with software engineers, security, and platform teams to understand workflows and document repeatable procedures.

Required Qualifications

  • 0-2 years of relevant experience (internships, co-ops, academic projects, or equivalent hands-on work are acceptable).
  • Working knowledge of Git and a basic understanding of modern SDLC practices.
  • Comfort operating in Linux environments and using the command line for routine tasks.
  • Basic scripting ability (Bash) and the ability to read and modify scripts with guidance.
  • Clear written communication skills and attention to detail, especially for creating and maintaining documentation.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Exposure to AWS fundamentals (compute, networking, IAM concepts, and managed services).
  • Familiarity with GitLab (repositories, merge requests, and CI/CD pipelines).
  • Introductory programming experience in Python and/or C#.
  • Basic familiarity with containerization (Docker concepts such as images, containers, and registries).
  • Experience writing or maintaining technical documentation (wikis, runbooks, tutorials, or internal guides).

Working Style and Expectations

  • Follow established operational procedures and document any gaps or improvements discovered while executing tasks.
  • Ask questions early, communicate progress clearly, and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Focus on repeatability: prefer automation and documentation over one-off fixes whenever practical.
  • Demonstrate continuous learning (tools, platforms, and reliability practices) and apply feedback quickly.

Note: Tool exposure (AWS, GitLab, Bash, Python/C#, containerization) is helpful but not expected at an expert level for this entry-level role.
