What is an entry level science writer?

Entry level science writers are professionals who communicate scientific information to a general or specialized audience, usually at the beginning of their careers. They may write articles, press releases, reports, or educational materials that translate complex scientific concepts into clear, accessible language. These writers often work for media outlets, research institutions, universities, or science-focused organizations. Entry level positions typically require at least a bachelor's degree in a science or communications-related field, strong writing skills, and an interest in making science understandable and engaging for the public.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level science writer?

To thrive as an Entry Level Science Writer, you need a solid understanding of scientific concepts, strong writing skills, and a relevant bachelor's degree in science or journalism. Familiarity with research databases, citation management tools, and content management systems is typically expected. Attention to detail, curiosity, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly are essential soft skills. These qualities enable effective translation of technical science into accessible content, ensuring accuracy and audience engagement.

What are some typical challenges entry level science writers face when transitioning from academic writing to professional science communication?

Entry level science writers often find the shift from academic to professional writing challenging because it requires translating complex scientific concepts into clear, engaging language suitable for broader audiences. Unlike academic writing, which emphasizes technical detail and formality, professional science communication demands brevity, accessibility, and storytelling skills. New science writers must also learn to adapt their tone for different platforms, meet tight deadlines, and collaborate closely with editors, researchers, and graphic designers to ensure accuracy and clarity. Overcoming these challenges is key to producing effective science content and advancing in the field.

• Support the design of data transfer paths between network-attached storage (NAS) and other high throughput systems, including selection of appropriate buses, protocols, and interfaces.
• Help select and specify high speed data transfer cards and related hardware (e.g., 1 GbE, 10 GbE, 40 GbE, 100GbE NICs, switches, and cabling) to meet throughput requirements.
• Develop and maintain network block diagrams, logical and physical topology diagrams, port maps, and interface documentation using standard diagramming tools.
• Install, configure, and assist in maintaining rack-mounted servers, switches, and other hardware.
• Support design and documentation of integrated network systems that can be placed in rugged or specialized enclosures.
• Assist in evaluating and documenting power draw and basic thermal considerations for network components to support power planning within racks and integrated systems.
• Install, configure, and troubleshoot Ethernet-based and fiber-based KVM solutions to support local and remote system administration.
• Support the installation, configuration, and basic troubleshooting of network switches.
• Work with software engineering teams to ensure the network infrastructure supports required applications, services, and data flows, including bandwidth and latency needs.
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and systems engineering to ensure that network hardware is properly accommodated in physical designs and integration plans.
• Learn and apply network security requirements derived from applicable government, industry, or customer standards under the guidance of senior staff.
• Support tracking and coordination of software, firmware, and licenses associated with network hardware, including updates and renewals.
• Develop and maintain procedures and documentation for building, configuring, operating, and maintaining networks.
• Assist in implementing secure remote login mechanisms to access networked systems in coordination with cybersecurity and system administration teams.
• Travel to customer sites, field locations, and deployment sites as required, potentially including OCONUS locations (estimated 25-50%)

Required:
• US Citizenship required.
• Must be able to obtain/maintain security clearance at a level equivalent to Department of Defense (DOD) SECRET.
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology, Network Engineering, Network Administration, Telecommunications, or a closely related technical field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
• Basic familiarity with high-speed Ethernet technologies (e.g., 1/10/40/100 GbE) and related hardware such as NICs, switches, transceivers, and cabling.
• Foundational understanding of IP networking concepts, including TCP/IP, subnets, routing, switching, VLANs, DHCP, and DNS.
• Basic scripting/programming experience for network automation (Python, Bash, PowerShell, Ansible, etc.) or demonstrated aptitude for technical automation and willingness to develop scripting skills.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to assist in designing networks and systematically troubleshoot issues under guidance.
• Clear written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create and interpret technical documentation and engage effectively with customers and cross-functional teams.
• Effective collaboration and organizational skills, including managing multiple tasks, maintaining accurate documentation, and paying close attention to detail.
• Demonstrated initiative and commitment to continuous learning in networking, network security, and integrated hardware/software systems.
Preferred:
• Internship, co-op, laboratory, or project experience involving network design, configuration, or administration.
• Hands-on experience with switch/router CLI configuration (Cisco IOS, Arista EOS, etc.).
• Exposure to or coursework in network security concepts and frameworks commonly used in government or regulated environments.
• Industry certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Cisco CCNA, or equivalent.
• Familiarity with KVM technologies (Ethernet-based and fiber-based) and remote access solutions used for system administration.
• Experience with NAS or other networked storage solutions, particularly in data-intensive applications.
• Exposure or knowledge of air-gapped network design principles.
• Basic understanding of power planning for IT/network equipment (e.g., calculating power budgets, understanding PSU ratings and redundancy).
