Job Description

AECOM has an exciting opportunity for an entry-level Geologist/Environmental Scientist to join the Environmental Remediation team in our Novi, Michigan office. You will work with a diverse team of technical leaders across a broad range of practice areas delivering remediation consulting services to our key clients.

This position is expected to begin ASAP.

This position also requires excellent written and spoken communication skills, organizational and time management skills, flexibility to work on a multitude of diverse projects, a positive attitude, and a willingness to learn new skills. The successful candidate will have the ability to communicate effectively with members of the project team and be able to work independently.

The successful candidate will assist with gathering and analyzing geological, hydrogeological and geochemical data in both the field and office settings. The field activities will consist of soil, groundwater, surface water, sediment, air and soil vapor sample collection, geological logging and interpretation, and the oversight of subcontractors including laboratories and excavation and drilling companies in all weather conditions. The office activities will involve preparation of investigation reports or other environmental plans/documents.

The responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conducting environmental field work, including collecting soil, surface water, groundwater, and remediation system data; soil logging; and fluid level gauging.
  • Oversight of contractors conducting field surveys, drilling, well installation, development operations, and utility clearance for intrusive operations.
  • Working independently in the field. Participation in a health and safety team performing inspections, observations, and training.
  • Field document preparation, field data collection, processing, and interpretation.
  • Supporting office tasks, including data entry, data analysis, report preparation, and maintenance of records.
  • Collect and record data and compare results to relevant studies, state and federal regulations to ensure compliance.
  • Travel to project locations including driving and overnight stays.

Candidate must also be able to work as part of a project team comprised of AECOM staff and subcontractors. Flexibility to work on a multitude of diverse projects, a positive attitude, and commitment to workplace health and safety are imperative. Field work will be required, including oversight of subcontractors.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Geology, Environmental Science, Chemistry or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Valid U.S. Driver's License required to visit project sites, clients, and other AECOM offices. 
  • As a condition of employment, selected candidate must pass a Motor Vehicle Records review and a substance abuse test.
  • Candidate will undergo medical surveillance screening as part of the hiring process.
  • Due to the nature of work, US citizenship is required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.
  • Experience working on State of Michigan led projects.
  • Ability to understand and supervise advancement of soil borings and installation of monitoring wells.
  • Ability to demonstrate a primary technical role in multiple site characterization, subsurface investigation, and remediation projects at various client sites.
  • Collect and evaluate environmental data in field and office settings.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, comfortable meeting with clients, colleagues and sub-contractors alike.
  • Flexible with working hours and locations, frequent travel within 1 - 2-hour drive of Novi office, and occasionally further.
  • Willingness and ability to learn and rapidly master new tasks.
  • Strong research and report writing (including web-based research).
  • Excellent written and verbal skills.
  • Strong quality and time management.
  • Self-starter, develops and delivers work under own initiative.
  • Solid attention to detail and thorough approach to work.
  • Learn and develop a keen understanding of hazard recognition and environmental investigation or remediation.
  • Candidate must be proficient with basic computer programs: MS Word and MS Excel.
Additional Information
  • Relocation assistance is not available for this position.
  • This position requires a hybrid work schedule which includes office work in Novi, Michigan and field work primarily in Michigan and in other states.
  • 50-90% field work is required.
  • Selected Candidate will also receive Health and Safety training and other AECOM specific training upon hire.
