What is an entry level RVA air traffic controller?

Entry Level RVA Air Traffic Controllers are professionals who manage the safe and efficient movement of aircraft within controlled airspace and on the ground at airports, specifically employed by Robinson Aviation (RVA), a private air traffic control services provider. They are responsible for monitoring aircraft positions, issuing instructions to pilots, and ensuring separation between planes to prevent collisions. These roles are typically found at smaller airports where RVA contracts with the FAA to provide air traffic control services, and entry level positions are designed for those just starting their ATC careers. Training is provided both on-the-job and through formal programs to ensure controllers meet safety and operational standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level RVA air traffic controller?

To thrive as an Entry Level RVA Air Traffic Controller, you need strong situational awareness, quick decision-making abilities, and a high school diploma or equivalent, often supplemented by passing the FAA Air Traffic Selection and Training (AT-SAT) exam. Familiarity with radar systems, radio communication tools, and FAA regulations is essential for daily operations. Outstanding communication, stress management, and teamwork skills help you excel in high-pressure situations and coordinate with pilots and colleagues. These skills are crucial for ensuring the safe and efficient movement of aircraft and maintaining safety in the national airspace system.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level RVA air traffic controllers, and how can new hires prepare for them?

Entry-level air traffic controllers at RVA often encounter challenges such as adapting to high-pressure situations, mastering complex communication protocols, and quickly developing situational awareness. New hires may also need to adjust to rotating shifts and maintain focus during long periods of monitoring. To prepare, candidates should focus on building strong multitasking and decision-making skills, practice clear and concise communication, and familiarize themselves with FAA regulations and standard operating procedures. Many find that seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues and participating in simulation training helps ease the transition into the role.

The Opportunity:

We are currently seeking a Traffic Control Center Operator to support Florida's Turnpike Enterprise in Pompano Beach, Florida.

This role is ideal for someone looking to start or grow a career in customer service, call center operations, dispatch, or real-time transportation operations. Whether you have experience in a call center, retail, hospitality, public safety, or another fast-paced environment, this position offers the opportunity to learn valuable skills while supporting the safety and mobility of Florida's roadway system.

As a Traffic Control Center Operator, you will work in a team-oriented, 24/7 operations center where you'll monitor traffic conditions, communicate with emergency responders and field personnel, and provide timely information to help keep travelers safe. This position offers comprehensive training, career growth opportunities, and the chance to make a meaningful impact every day.

What You’ll Do:

As a Traffic Control Center Operator, you will monitor traffic conditions, respond to incoming calls and information requests, and support roadway operations throughout Florida's Turnpike system. Using cameras, communication systems, and specialized software, you'll help identify incidents, coordinate with first responders and field personnel, and provide real-time updates to motorists.

In this role, you'll develop skills in customer service, communication, incident management, and multi-tasking while working in a fast-paced team environment. No prior traffic operations experience is required—we provide the training and support needed to help you succeed.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Monitor traffic conditions using cameras, software systems, and communication tools.
  • Receive and respond to phone calls regarding roadway conditions, incidents, and requests for Road Ranger assistance.
  • Enter and update information in computer systems accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Communicate with emergency responders, maintenance personnel, and internal teams to support roadway operations.
  • Provide timely traveler information through electronic message boards, websites, and other communication systems.
  • Dispatch and monitor Road Ranger Safety Patrol operators.
  • Track incidents and document activities using established procedures.
  • Identify and report equipment issues and maintenance concerns.
  • Maintain accurate records and shift reports.
  • Participate in team meetings and ongoing training programs.
  • Support a safe and efficient transportation system for the traveling public.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Bring:

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Previous experience in customer service, call center operations, dispatch, retail, hospitality, public safety, or another fast-paced environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with two-way radio systems or communication equipment.
  • Ability to gather information from multiple sources and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure.
  • Comfortable using computers and learning new software systems.
  • Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexibility to work rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and holidays in a 24/7 operation.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced environment requiring excellent customer service and communication skills.
