Job description

Department Overview

Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) is a nationally prominent research university, and Oregon's only public academic health center. OHSU was awarded Magnet Re-designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center in 2022.

The Medical ICU is a Beacon Award winning unit at OHSU.  As a unit we focus on providing both evidence-based and trauma informed care to all our patients. 

The Medical ICU strives to provide the highest level of nursing care to our patients and families and to ensure patient outcomes through evidence-based nursing practice. We foster a healthy work environment in our team oriented high acuity ICU. . Our MICU offers lots of opportunities for nurses to grow their practice in devices, such as CRRT and ECMO, in addition to frontline leadership roles. The Medical Intensive Care Unit utilizes a multidisciplinary team approach to the care we provide to our patients: 40kg weight minimum, age generally not less than 16 years with no upper age limit. 

Diagnoses include but are not limited to: 

  • Pulmonary Hypertension
  • Severe Septic Shock
  • Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS)
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Organ Failures
  • Bone Marrow Transplant
  • Post Cardiac and Respiratory Arrest
  • Alcohol and drug withdraw
  • GI Bleed
  • Patients also may present with extensive preexisting co-morbidities requiring the services of teams such as Nephrology, Pain Service, Infectious Disease, etc.
Function/Duties of Position

$55.24 - $92.02 per hour, based on RN Degree and level of experience

The OHSU Clinical registered nurse (RN) provides compassionate, evidence-based, and efficient care to individuals, families, communities and patient populations. The Clinical RN's care delivery is consistent with the Oregon Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, and the ANA Code of Ethics. The Clinical RN demonstrates the professional role obligations of scientist, leader, practitioner, and knowledge transferor [Onsomble Model of the Professional Role]. Professional accountability enriches the Clinical RN's engagement as a leader in promoting an inter-professional culture of collaborative decision-making, innovation, life-long learning, and teamwork. The Clinical Nurse exemplifies the principles of a Culture of Safety by committing to a Just Culture, a Reporting Culture, Learning Culture, and an Engaged Informed Culture.

Required Qualifications
  • 1 year of critical care RN experience
  • BSN Graduates: Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing from a program accredited by Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (CNEA) 30 days before start date.
  • ADN Graduates: Associate Degree in Nursing from an accredited program 30 days before the start date.
  • Associate degree Nurses required to enroll in BSN program within 3 years of hire and complete within 5 years of hire
  • Internal ONA applicants: Associate Degree in Nursing; BSN preferred
  • Current, unencumbered Oregon State Registered Nurse License
  • BLS and ACLS from AHA required. New hires will be enrolled and required to complete during orientation.
  • Must be able to perform the essential functions of the position with or without accommodation

Additional Details
  • Length of Orientation - Experienced Nurse 

    • External candidates: OHSU & Nursing New Employee Orientation (NEO) for about a week. 
    • Either Transition to Practice (TTP) Program Specialty Fellowship/Fellowship Learning Pathway or Orientation experience for 3 days-26 weeks depending on the care area. An employment service agreement may apply.
