Position Summary
The Assistant Field Technician is an entry-level field support position designed for individuals interested in beginning a career in transformer service, industrial maintenance, heavy equipment support, or utility field operations.
This role provides hands-on exposure to transformer field work while assisting senior technicians with equipment setup, jobsite preparation, mechanical support, maintenance activities, and general labor functions. The Assistant Field Technician works under direct supervision and receives on-the-job training to build technical skills needed to progress into a Transformer Field Technician I role.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
• Assist field technicians with daily setup and teardown of equipment and work areas.
• Load, unload, organize, and transport tools, hoses, pumps, cables, and field equipment.
• Support mobilization and demobilization of transformer service projects.
• Maintain clean, organized, and safe workspaces on jobsites.
• Assist with staging materials and preparing equipment for daily tasks.
• Assist technicians with transformer assembly and disassembly activities.
• Help install transformer accessories such as radiators, piping, conservators, gauges, and hardware.
• Support gasket replacement and cleaning of transformer components.
• Assist with oil processing hose setup, filtration system preparation, and vacuum equipment staging.
• Observe and assist with transformer maintenance procedures.
• Maintain and clean field equipment, trailers, hoses, pumps, and tools.
• Assist with inspecting equipment before and after use.
• Report damaged or malfunctioning tools and equipment to supervisors.
• Support inventory tracking and organization of field supplies.
Requirements
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Mechanical aptitude or experience in construction, electrical, or industrial work preferred
Valid driver's license required (CDL is a plus or willingness to obtain)
Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
Ability to lift 50+ lbs and perform physically demanding tasks
Willingness to travel and work flexible hours, including overtime as needed
Strong work ethic and ability to follow instructions
Preferred Experience (Not Required)
Experience working around transformers, substations, or heavy equipment
Basic knowledge of electrical systems or industrial maintenance
Rigging or equipment operation experience
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
