Scope of Work: The Naval Information Warfare Center Atlantic (NIWC LANT) Cloud Computing Innovation, Transformation, and Integration (CLOUD CITI) Division is tasked with providing hosting environments and platforms for Navy applications, as well as other DoD and Homeland Security (HLS) applications utilizing both Component Enterprise Data Centers (CEDCs) and Commercial Cloud Service Providers (CSPs) as hosting platforms. As part of this program, Modus21 is seeking a Junior Red Hat Engineer / Linux Administrator to support the administration, maintenance, and operation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux server environments. This role is intended for a new professional or early career candidate who has foundational knowledge of Linux systems and is interested in growing their skills in enterprise infrastructure, automation, cybersecurity, and cloud environments. The selected candidate will work as part of a team of experienced Linux, Unix, cloud, cybersecurity, and infrastructure engineers supporting shared services, multi-tiered applications, and mission systems. The role will provide hands-on exposure to RHEL 8/9 server platforms, system administration, patching, monitoring, troubleshooting, documentation, automation, and security compliance activities. The ideal candidate should have a strong technical foundation, a willingness to learn, good communication skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a multi-functional team environment. Experience with Red Hat, Linux command line administration, scripting, virtualization, automation tools, AWS, or cybersecurity practices is helpful but not required. Red Hat certifications such as RHCSA or RHCE are preferred but not required. Responsibilities: -Assist with routine administration and maintenance of Linux server platforms, including installation, configuration, patching, updates, and basic troubleshooting.
-Support system monitoring activities and help identify server, application, or performance issues.
-Assist senior engineers with troubleshooting issues in preproduction and production environments.
-Support security hardening activities and assist with vulnerability scans, audit preparation, and remediation efforts.
-Work with infrastructure, cybersecurity, application, network, and storage teams to support system operations.
-Assist with the development or maintenance of scripts and automation to reduce manual tasks.
-Support documentation updates, including system lifecycle documentation, standard operating procedures, and technical guides.
-Participate in testing and validation of new tools, system configurations, and cloud-based solutions.
-Learn and apply enterprise IT best practices related to Linux administration, automation, monitoring, and security compliance.
-Escalate technical issues appropriately and work under the guidance of senior team members. Required Skills: -Foundational knowledge of Linux or Unix operating systems, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8/9.
-Familiarity with using the Linux command line interface.
-Basic understanding of networking concepts and the OSI model.
-Familiarity with common Linux text editors such as vim, nano, or similar tools.
-Basic understanding of system administration concepts such as user accounts, permissions, file systems, services, logs, and patching.
-Familiarity with version control concepts or tools such as Git.
-Basic understanding of cybersecurity principles and secure system administration practices.
-Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment.
-Willingness to learn enterprise tools, automation platforms, cloud technologies, and security compliance processes. Desired Skills: -Exposure to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8/9, CentOS, or other Linux distributions.
-Familiarity with Red Hat tools such as Red Hat IdM, Red Hat Satellite, or Ansible Automation Platform.
-Basic understanding of automation or scripting using Bash, Python, Ansible, PowerShell, or similar technologies.
-Exposure to web or application platforms such as Apache, Tomcat, JBoss, PHP, MySQL, DNS/BIND, Postfix, or Sendmail.
-Familiarity with monitoring or management tools such as Splunk, SolarWinds, Nagios, or similar platforms.
-Exposure to virtualization technologies such as VMware vCenter.
-Basic understanding of cloud services, preferably AWS services such as EC2, S3, Systems Manager, or IAM.
-Familiarity with enterprise storage, backup, disaster recovery, or data center concepts.
-Exposure to security tools and compliance frameworks such as STIG, SCAP, RMF, SELinux, HBSS, or FAPolicy. Requirements/Experience: -Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/Electronic/Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or Information Systems
-1+ years of professional experience in systems administration
-Must be a US citizen
-Must be able to obtain a Department of Defense (DoD) TOP SECRET Security Clearance
-Required CompTIA Security+ certification
-Required Red Hat certification such as RHCSA, RHCE, or other relevant technical certification
-Ability to follow procedures accurately and escalate issues appropriately
-Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
