Purpose of this Position:
The Montgomery County Clerk's Office is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Deputy Clerk I to support the Vital Statistics Division. This entry-level position is ideal for someone who enjoys working with the public, is organized, and is interested in developing a long-term career in public service. The selected candidate will learn the core processes of issuing, reviewing, and maintaining vital records while supporting day-to-day division operations.
Primary Job Duties
• Process customer transactions related to birth certificates, death certificates, marriage licenses, and other vital records.
• Assist with verifying eligibility, identity, and all required documentation.
• Learn proper procedures for handling sensitive and confidential records in accordance with state regulations.
• Review documents for accuracy, completeness, and compliance.
• Collect fees, issue receipts, and balance transactions as assigned.
• Provide clear, accurate information to the public while following established state and county requirements.
• Perform data entry, scanning, filing, and digital/physical record maintenance.
• Assist with document management workflows and office support tasks as needed.
• Follow all county policies, procedures, confidentiality laws, and record retention requirement
Education, Experience and Skill Requirements
Required
• Must be able to work in person; this position is not remote
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Strong customer service and communication skills.
• Professional demeanor and reliability.
• Attention to detail and ability to follow procedures.
• Basic computer skills and comfort using office technology.
• Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion.
• Ability to learn new systems, processes, and regulations.
Preferred
• Bilingual (English/Spanish).
• Prior experience in customer service or administrative roles.
• Experience working with the public in a fast-paced environment.
• Cash-handling or transaction-processing experience.
• Interest in government, legal records, or public service.

Compensation
This position pays $19.00 per hour ($39,520 annually), paid on a bi-weekly schedule. Employees are eligible for applicable County cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs) and promotional increases in accordance with the County's step plan. A probationary increase may be available after six months of service, based on performance and completion of required training, with pay increasing up to $20.24 per hour ($42,099.20 annually). Upon successful completion of the required educational components for Deputy Clerk I and one year of service with the County Clerk, employees are eligible for promotion to Deputy Clerk II.
