Brookhaven Animal Hospital is seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant or Technician to join our compassionate, client-centered general practice. This role is ideal for technicians who enjoy hands-on patient care, excel in surgical and anesthetic support, and have experience with veterinary dentistry, including dental prophylaxis and dental radiography.

This position is not entry level. To be successful, candidates should bring prior clinical experience in a small animal practice and be confident supporting anesthesia, surgery, and dental procedures.

As a Veterinary Technician, you will play a vital role in patient care, surgical support, and client education. You will work closely with veterinarians and support staff to ensure safe anesthesia, effective dental care, and positive patient outcomes.

Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Anesthesia Support
  • Administer medications via IV, SQ, IM, and oral routes as prescribed
  • Place and maintain intravenous catheters; perform venipuncture
  • Prepare patients for surgery and dental procedures
  • Monitor anesthesia during surgical and dental cases, including induction, maintenance, and recovery
  • Monitor hospitalized patients, track vital signs, and ensure patient comfort
  • Assist veterinarians during surgical procedures
  • Perform and support dental prophylaxis
  • Obtain and position veterinary dental radiographs
  • Assist with surgical prep, instrument setup, and sterile technique
  • Clean, package, and sterilize surgical and dental instruments
  • Perform in-house diagnostics including bloodwork, urinalysis, and fecal testing
  • Assist with digital radiography (positioning, safety, image quality)
  • Prepare and submit laboratory samples as needed
  • Educate clients on post-operative care, dental health, medications, and preventive care
  • Assist with patient admissions and discharges, including reviewing instructions
  • Communicate clearly and compassionately with clients regarding care plans
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records within the practice management system
  • Support efficient workflow and collaborate closely with veterinarians and team members
  • Participate in ongoing training and skill development

Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
 
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • This is not an entry-level position
  • Minimum 1–2+ years of hands-on experience as a Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant in a clinical setting
  • Strong experience with:
    • Anesthesia monitoring and recovery
    • Surgical assisting
    • IV catheter placement and venipuncture
  • Ability to assist with or perform dental procedures 
  • Experience with veterinary dental prophylaxis and dental radiography
  • Credentialed Veterinary Technician (CVT/LVT/RVT) or eligibility for licensure
  • Experience in a high-quality small animal general practice
  • Familiarity with veterinary practice management software (PIMS)
  • Interest in advanced dentistry, surgery, or anesthesia
