Job Summary

The Technical Theatre Assistant (FOH & Production Support) plays a vital role in the successful execution of live theatre productions by providing hands-on technical, production, and front-of-house support. This position is primarily focused on assisting technical theatre staff with the physical preparation, construction, and maintenance of production elements, while also supporting Front of House (FOH) operations during performances. Approximately 60% of the role supports technical theatre and production activities, with 40% dedicated to ushering and FOH support, reflecting the integrated nature of theatre operations.

This role offers practical, skill-building experience across multiple areas of theatre production and serves as an entry point into the technical theatre hierarchy.

Primary ResponsibilitiesTechnical Theatre & Production Support (Approx. 60%)
  • Assist technical staff with set construction, scenic fabrication, and strike, including carpentry and assembly tasks.
  • Support prop construction, organization, maintenance, and storage.
  • Assist with costume preparation, organization, and basic maintenance as needed.
  • Help with stage preparation and maintenance, including cleaning, repairs, and backstage organization.
  • Assist in the installation, testing, and operation of lighting, sound, and projection equipment under supervision.
  • Participate in load-in, build, changeovers, and load-out for productions and events.
Front of House & Performance Support (Approx. 40%)
  • Serve as an usher during performances, welcoming patrons and providing audience assistance.
  • Support Front of House management, including seating coordination, accessibility assistance, and audience safety.
  • Act as a liaison between FOH and backstage staff when necessary to support smooth performance operations.

General Duties

  • Follow safety procedures and maintain a safe working environment.
  • Collaborate with technical, artistic, and FOH teams to ensure efficient production workflows.
  • Perform other theatre-related duties as assigned to support productions and events.
Work Experience
  • No prior professional experience required
  • Previous coursework or interest in theatre, technical production, or live events is beneficial
Physical Demands
  • Position requires moderate to strenuous physical activity, including lifting, carrying, bending, and standing for extended periods.
  • Comfort working on ladders, scaffolding, and staging is required.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, collaborative environment during builds and performances.
