Our DataBased+ Studio team, in our Chicago office, is seeking an Entry Level Building Performance Analyst. This role will support the engineering of systems for a variety of projects creating designs for all kinds of spaces.

Position Overview
In the DataBased+ studio within dbHMS, Building Performance Analysts ask and answer questions that lead to design decisions that improve indoor air quality and thermal comfort, minimize cost, and maximize resource efficiency of buildings, campuses, neighborhoods, or regions. Every new building, major renovation, or community planning project at DataBased+ has a Building Performance Analyst as part of the design team to deliver the best built environment for our clients. The ideal candidate will have the ability to innovate and work with clients and design teams, both internal and external, to identify, implement, and document high-performance building strategies that deliver best in class system performance.
Essential Job Functions
The role requires a self-starter able to work independently both in a group environment and in the field. The Building Performance Analyst will ensure the building projects that come through the firm and studio will maximize the positive, human-centered outcomes by employing sound scientific principles and:
  • Analyzing building performance data and identifying opportunities for improvement.
  • Thinking innovatively while moving designs forward from concept to design development.
  • Applying knowledge of passive and active engineered systems to make recommendations about building components and design elements.
  • Learning concepts rapidly, then apply and articulate them appropriately. This includes, but is not limited to: technologies/strategies associated with high-performance building design, ever evolving building codes and standards, and benchmarking tools associated with high-performance building design (e.g. Living Building Challenge, Passivhaus)
  • Managing communications effectively across disciplines and simultaneous projects.
  • Performing financial analysis and communicating effectively with decision makers.
  • Communicating effectively in spoken, written, and visual presentation across disciplines.
  • Using industry standard and state of the art software tools to analyze the resource use of engineered building systems and their components at all scales from the system level up through and including the regional grid level and accurately predict their impact on human health and environmental sustainability.
  • Reading and understanding construction documents, floor plans, specifications, and details.
  • Surveying existing buildings and identifying systems and components.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Energy, Computational Analysis, or similar.
  • EIT on PE track (or willing to obtain within 2 years).
  • Experience in one of the following building performance analysis software:
    • Open Studio/Energy Plus,
    • Grasshopper plug-in and associated programs,
    • DesignBuilder,
    • TRNSYS,
    • TRACE 3-D, 700,
    • IES.
  • Experience in Revit, BIM360, or similar building information modeling software.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Programs.

Additional Preferred Qualifications
  • ASHRAE Building Energy Modeling Professional certification,
  • ASHRAE High-Performance Building Design Professional certification.
  • Computational Fluid Dynamics modeling,
  • Carbon modeling,
  • Resilience analysis.
