Entry Level Product Development information

What is an entry level product development job?

An entry level product development job involves assisting in the design, creation, and improvement of new products or features under the supervision of more experienced team members. Responsibilities often include conducting market research, creating prototypes, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and gathering user feedback. This role is ideal for recent graduates or individuals new to the field who are looking to gain experience in bringing ideas to market. Strong communication, problem-solving skills, and a willingness to learn are important for success in entry level product development positions.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level product development professionals, and how can they overcome them?

Entry-level professionals in product development often face challenges such as balancing multiple project priorities, quickly adapting to changing product requirements, and effectively communicating ideas within cross-functional teams. To overcome these challenges, it's helpful to stay organized by using project management tools, proactively seek feedback from more experienced colleagues, and actively participate in team meetings to improve communication skills. Embracing a growth mindset and being open to learning from setbacks will also help new product developers build confidence and advance in their roles.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level product development professional, and why are they important?

To excel in Entry Level Product Development, you need a background in product design, basic market research, and project management, often supported by a relevant degree such as business, engineering, or design. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, CAD software, and project management platforms (e.g., Jira or Trello) is commonly expected. Creativity, problem-solving, and strong teamwork are vital soft skills that help drive innovation and effective collaboration. These competencies ensure the successful creation, refinement, and launch of products that meet market needs and organizational goals.

What is the difference between Entry Level Product Development vs Entry Level Product Design?

Entry Level Product Development and Entry Level Product Design share overlapping skills like creativity and teamwork but differ mainly in focus. Product development emphasizes engineering and manufacturing processes, while product design centers on aesthetics and user experience. Both roles are essential in bringing a product from concept to market, often working closely together in the product lifecycle.

What degree do you need to work in entry level product development?

Entry level product development roles typically require a bachelor's degree in fields such as engineering, design, business, or related areas. Relevant skills include knowledge of product lifecycle, prototyping tools, and teamwork, with some positions valuing internships or certifications in project management or CAD software.

This role requires a proactive engineer who can seamlessly execute tasks within larger projects, applying their technical skills to solve complex challenges under the guidance of senior team members.

  • Design & Development: Assist in designing, developing, and testing mechanical and opto-mechanical components for high-performance 3D sensor products.
  • Data-Driven Analysis: Support the team by applying statistical analysis (such as Lean Six Sigma concepts) to sensor data from builds to help assess adherence to design requirements.
  • Task Execution: Run down assigned tasks for larger projects, asking insightful questions to clarify requirements and maintain the highest standard of work quality.
  • Proactive Problem-Solving: Actively identify technical obstacles during your tasks and collaborate with senior engineers to research, test, and propose alternative solutions.
  • Technical Documentation: Create and maintain all necessary technical documentation, including detailed 3D CAD models (SolidWorks), 2D fabrication drawings (GD&T), bill of materials (BOMs), and test reports.
  • Collaboration & Improvement: Actively participate in peer design reviews to learn, receive constructive feedback, and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Familiarity with 3D CAD software (SolidWorks preferred) for part and assembly modeling.
  • Basic understanding of statistical analysis for decision-making (e.g., Lean Six Sigma concepts, SPC, DOE, or analyzing build data).
  • A self-driven and passionate mindset with a strong motivation to meet goals accurately and on time.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration across departments.
Bonus Points (Significant Advantages)
  • Academic exposure, internship experience, or strong knowledge of 3D metrology, machine vision, robotics, or precision sensor design.
  • Exposure to or coursework involving opto-mechanical design, precision lens mounting, or the integration of optical components.
  • Familiarity with scripting languages (like Python) for data analysis or task automation.
  • Registration or eligibility to register as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT).
  • Familiarity with project management software tools to help maintain and track task completion status.
  • Exposure to AI-driven engineering tools (such as generative design features in 3D CAD) or productivity tools (like large language models for scripting, data analysis, or task automation) to enhance workflows.

Salary Range: $62,100 CAD to $88,578 CAD + Eligibility for Profit Sharing Program Participation (pending successful completion of probationary period and based on business performance)

Perks and Benefits

  • Health Benefits: Full health care coverage (with 100% paid premiums) including dental, vision, and drugs for you and your family.
  • Work-Life Balance: We support a healthy balance with hybrid work arrangements, flextime, and competitive paid time off.
  • Growth & Development: An annual Education Support Program for training and professional growth, plus annual performance reviews.
  • Enjoy free snacks and drinks, team-building events, tenure awards, and our official "May the 4th" (Star Wars Day) company holiday!
  • Access to an on-site fitness facility, tennis/basketball court, and company-wide wellness initiatives
