TRIUMF is home to an impressive accelerator complex, including the 520 MeV Cyclotron, Electron Linear Accelerator (E-LINAC), TRIUMF Isotope Separator and Accelerator (ISAC) facility, Advanced Rare IsotopE Laboratory (ARIEL), TR13, and TR24 cyclotrons. We are seeking an entry-level accelerator operator to join our diverse team in the control room.

At TRIUMF, you'll participate in exciting projects and collaborate with leading institutions and researchers. We offer a dynamic work environment that encourages continuous learning. As our accelerators operate 24/7, the individual in this role will work on a rotating shift schedule.

Responsibilities

Key responsibilities of our operators include:

  • Operating and monitoring accelerator systems in a fast-paced control room environment to safely, reliably, and timely deliver particle beams to experiments.

  • Responding to alarms from ancillary systems, including electro-mechanical devices, cooling services, vacuum equipment, power supplies, and computer controls.

  • Identifying and troubleshooting accelerator system faults.

  • Assisting with emergency response activities and ensuring site security protocols are maintained.

  • Mitigating radiation hazards using ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principles.

  • Communicating effectively with researchers, engineers, and support staff to ensure smooth operations.

  • Documenting shift activities in logbooks and producing statistical records.

  • Authoring and editing operational procedures.

  • Participating in the coordination of accelerator maintenance activities, including issuing and processing work permits.

As an accelerator operator, there will be occasions when you work independently and when collaboration with other operators or members of various other groups is essential. Accelerator operators must demonstrate versatility, excelling in both independent work and collaborative teamwork.

Skills and Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following skills and attributes:

  • Strong interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to think critically under pressure.
  • Maintain a high level of safety awareness
  • The ability to multitask and react to changes in priority.
  • Curiosity and desire to learn new things.

While not mandatory, the following skills and experiences are considered advantageous:

  • Customer service experience.
  • Basic knowledge of programming or computer systems.
  • Previous shift work experience.
  • Hands-on mechanical and/or electrical skills.

Education

An undergraduate degree or diploma in a STEM discipline is required for this role.

Nuclear Energy Worker (NEW)

You will be required to successfully complete the TRIUMF in-house radiation safety training course and be designated as a TRIUMF Nuclear Energy Worker.

Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

The position offers a starting salary of $56,494.00 per annum, complemented by a comprehensive benefits package. The salary for the position will increase to $59,925 per annum upon successful completion of a 6-8month training program.
