Job Description:
ROLE OVERVIEW
The Power Analyst provides fundamental research and market intelligence directly supporting the East Power Desk. The role centers on supply-demand analysis, price formation, and generation and load dynamics across Eastern interconnect markets. The analyst will develop and maintain the fundamental views that inform trading decisions, build analytical tools that sharpen the team's market read, and serve as a key research resource for the East Power desk.
Key Responsibilities
Fundamental Research & Market Coverage
  • Develop and maintain fundamental views on Eastern interconnect power markets, covering PJM, MISO, NYISO, and ISO-NE supply-demand dynamics, seasonal outlooks, and price drivers.
  • Analyze load patterns, weather impacts, and demand trends across key Eastern regions to support the trading desk's positioning and market read.
  • Track thermal and renewable generation fleet conditions - outage schedules, capacity additions, retirements, and fuel cost dynamics - and assess their impact on regional power prices.
  • Monitor hydro conditions, nuclear availability, and storage penetration in Eastern markets and integrate these into ongoing fundamental views.
  • Synthesize fuel market fundamentals (natural gas, coal) and their pass-through effects on power price formation across Eastern hubs and zones.

Trading Desk Support
  • Serve as the primary research resource for the Head Trader, delivering timely, actionable fundamental analysis ahead of key market windows.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and seasonal market summaries that frame supply-demand balances, price risks, and notable developments across Eastern markets.
  • Identify emerging themes - generation mix shifts, extreme weather setups, regulatory developments, transmission upgrades - that may create trading opportunities or risks for the East Power desk.
  • Support trade idea generation by providing the fundamental context behind forward price curves, seasonal spreads, and inter-zonal relationships.

Modeling & Tool Development
  • Build and maintain fundamental dashboards, price forecasting models, and supply-demand trackers using Python, SQL, R, or Excel/VBA.
  • Leverage datasets from ISO portals, EIA, Yes Energy, and proprietary sources to support ongoing fundamental research and scenario analysis.
  • Apply statistical techniques to identify seasonal patterns, weather relationships, and structural drivers of Eastern power prices.
  • Collaborate with data engineering to improve data pipelines and automate recurring research workflows.

Communication
Strong ability to translate complex analysis into actionable insights for traders and stakeholders. High attention to detail and intellectual curiosity about power markets.
