Summary:
- Sr. Materials Technician understands and can discuss materials lab capabilities, terminology and concepts.
- In the Materials R&D group, the Sr. Technician will be responsible for conducting testing /experiments; writing technical reports; supporting test request workflow; operation of equipment in the materials characterization and testing labs; ensure compliance with client quality policies, support lab audits, maintain calibration of equipment and overall health of the labs.
- The Sr. Technician understands procedures and practices through appropriate communication, training and education of sound quality assurance principles; ensure compliance with all local, state, federal and client safety regulations, policies and procedures.
Job Responsibilities:
- Performs batch mixing, compounding and extruding of various material types
- They will interpret data to draw conclusions, identify trends and provide solutions.
- Is involved in problem-solving and improvement of test plans.
- Oversees lab supplies stock and reordering, acts as primary purchase order processor
- Manages the chemical inventory and MSDS upkeep. Ensures timely removal of expired chemicals.
- Is able to find common ground within a team to optimize problem-solving outcomes.
- Communicates relevant and accurate information in a timely manner to enable effective decision-making.
- Submits final data to requester and/or archival in conjunction with the lab technicians.
- Executes Continuous Improvement projects in the following (but not limited to) areas
- Equipment or method troubleshooting/repairs
- May establish materials lab capability operating procedures.
- Coordinates Equipment Upgrades and installation
- Fixture development and maintenance
- Minimal supervisory assistance
- Is encouraged to develop/seek out new industry, company, product or technical knowledge.
- May use logic and methods to solve difficult problems.
- Has limited understanding on how to organize people and activities.
- Adds value and provides direction on the subject matter.
- Works under general supervision.
- Has limited technical and practical knowledge of test method development.
- Has practical knowledge of statistical analysis and test report generation.
- Has limited understanding of Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) Title 21 rules and procedures for Current Good Laboratory Practices (cGLP) .
- Has general understanding of R&D lab maintenance and housekeeping requirements.
- Understands training regimen for lab procedures, preventive maintenance and calibration.
- Has practical and technical knowledge of small hand tools and/or precision devices to aid in test.
- Has practical and technical knowledge of other common lab instrumentation and equipment.
- Accountable for lab operations, calibration and maintenance of equipment.
- May mentor/supervise Jr. technicians.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in a Science or Engineering discipline with a minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience.
Knowledge and skills:
- Knowledge of the operation of mechanical measurement equipment (e.g. Instron) and two or more materials characterization capabilities (ie. Coefficient of Friction, FTIR, SEM/EDS, DSC, TGA) is required.
- Experience with polymer compounding (extrusion, batches mixing) and polymer processing (Injection Molding, compression molding and batch mixing is preferred.
- Superior communication skills, both written and oral.
- Proficient in MS Office / Word / Excel / PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of statistical analysis desirable.
- Superior attention to detail.
- Understands regulatory and quality requirements and external Regulations (ISO, FDA, OSHA, ASTM).
- Maintains good laboratory practices.
- May require some lifting of resin barrels.
