Entry Level Plc information

What is an entry level PLC?

Entry level PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) jobs are positions designed for individuals who are new to working with PLC systems in industrial automation. These roles typically involve supporting the design, programming, installation, and troubleshooting of PLC-controlled equipment under the supervision of more experienced engineers or technicians. Common duties include wiring control panels, assisting with PLC programming, and performing basic maintenance and diagnostics. Entry level PLC jobs are ideal for recent graduates or those with limited experience looking to start a career in industrial automation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level PLC technician?

To thrive as an Entry Level PLC Technician, you need a basic understanding of electrical engineering, automation concepts, and a relevant associate’s degree or technical certification. Familiarity with PLC programming languages (such as ladder logic), and experience using tools like Siemens or Allen-Bradley PLC systems are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in troubleshooting and working with teams. These skills are crucial for ensuring efficient automation processes, minimizing downtime, and contributing to safe and productive industrial environments.

What kinds of projects do entry level PLC engineers typically work on, and how do they collaborate with other team members?

Entry-level PLC engineers often assist with programming, testing, and troubleshooting automated control systems for manufacturing or industrial processes. They typically work closely with senior engineers, electricians, and maintenance teams to implement and refine control logic. Collaboration is essential, as they may participate in team meetings, contribute to design reviews, and provide on-site support during equipment commissioning. This hands-on experience helps them build foundational knowledge while developing communication and problem-solving skills.

What is the difference between Entry Level Plc vs Entry Level Automation Technician?

AspectEntry Level PlcEntry Level Automation Technician
Required CredentialsHigh school diploma, basic PLC programming knowledge, certifications like Siemens or Allen-BradleyHigh school diploma, basic electrical and PLC knowledge, certifications often include electrical or automation courses
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, industrial settings, control panelsIndustrial facilities, machinery maintenance, control systems
Industry UsagePrimarily in automation, manufacturing, and control systemsIn automation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of industrial equipment

Entry Level Plc roles focus on basic PLC programming and control system setup, while Entry Level Automation Technicians handle broader maintenance and troubleshooting of automation equipment. Both roles require similar certifications and work in industrial environments, but the technician role often involves more hands-on electrical work.

How to become an entry level PLC?

To become an entry-level PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) technician, you typically need a high school diploma or equivalent, along with training or certification in industrial automation or electrical systems. Gaining hands-on experience through technical programs, apprenticeships, or internships and learning to program and troubleshoot PLCs using tools like ladder logic are essential steps.

How to get an entry level PLC job?

To secure an entry-level PLC technician position, candidates should have a basic understanding of PLC programming, electrical systems, and automation concepts. Gaining relevant certifications, such as those in industrial control or automation, and completing hands-on training or internships can improve job prospects. Familiarity with PLC programming software and a willingness to learn on the job are also important.

Is entry level PLC still in demand?

Entry level PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) technicians are in steady demand due to ongoing automation in manufacturing, processing, and industrial environments. Basic knowledge of ladder logic, troubleshooting skills, and familiarity with PLC programming software increase employability in this field.

Job Description

This entry-level Automation Engineer role supports the maintenance, optimization, and continuous improvement of plant automation systems in a cement manufacturing environment. You will work closely with an experienced automation professional and cross-functional plant teams to maintain PLC systems, plant control computers, and networked control systems, while learning the operation of key production equipment and contributing to overall plant performance.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Automation Coordinator with the maintenance, troubleshooting, and optimization of PLC systems, plant control computers, plant supervisor controls, and plant network systems, including company computers.
  • Support tuning and adjustment of PID loops to improve control performance and process stability.
  • Promote and help implement new automation upgrades, features, and enhancements that improve plant performance and reliability.
  • Work closely with the Electrical/Instrument Supervisor to maintain and improve plant optimization and ensure alignment of automation and instrumentation activities.
  • Assist the Automation Coordinator in establishing, monitoring, and maintaining appropriate inventory levels of automation-related spare parts.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with internal customers across the plant to understand their needs and provide responsive automation support.
  • Ensure all automation activities conform to established Automation, IT, and corporate guidelines, standards, and procedures.
  • Operate PCs, operation computers, and process computers to monitor, troubleshoot, and adjust plant control systems.
  • Learn the operation of kiln, raw mill, and finish mill systems and apply this knowledge to enhance control strategies and system performance.
  • Collaborate closely with Process Engineers to understand plant equipment and its functionality, and to enhance control of main equipment for optimal plant performance.
  • Participate as an active member of the plant team, contributing to continuous improvement initiatives within the automation function and overall plant operations.
  • Meet on-call responsibilities in a 24/7 operation, once development criteria are met, to provide support for critical automation issues as needed.

Essential Skills

  • Engineering experience with a minimum of an associate degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.
  • Foundational understanding of PLC programming and control systems.
  • Ability to operate PCs, operation computers, and process computers in an industrial environment.
  • Interest in and aptitude for learning automation systems in a chemical or cement manufacturing setting.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team to support continuous improvement in both the functional area and overall plant operations.
  • Willingness and ability to meet on-call responsibilities in a 24/7 operation once adequately trained.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and a methodical approach to troubleshooting automation and control issues.
  • Effective communication skills to collaborate with internal customers, Process Engineers, and Electrical/Instrument teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Interest in growing automation experience under the mentorship of a highly experienced (25+ years) automation engineer.
  • Exposure to or experience in chemical manufacturing or similar process industries.
  • Familiarity with tuning PID loops and optimizing process control systems.
  • Willingness to learn the operation of kiln, raw mill, and finish mill systems and apply this knowledge to control strategy improvements.
  • Motivation to promote new automation upgrades and features that enhance plant performance.
  • Commitment to follow Automation, IT, and corporate guidelines and standards.

Work Environment

This role is based in a cement plant environment, with approximately 80% of the time spent in an office setting performing programming and computer-based work, and about 20% on the manufacturing floor. The office area is climate controlled and focused on computer, control system, and engineering tasks. The manufacturing floor is a warm and dusty industrial environment typical of cement production, where you will interact with equipment such as kilns, raw mills, and finish mills while supporting and observing automation systems in operation.
