The Junior Chemist will support the laboratory operations at Airgas USA, LLC by performing routine chemical analysis, maintaining lab equipment, and assisting senior chemists in various projects. This role is pivotal in supporting the quality and safety of Airgas products and processes.
  • Perform routine chemical and physical analyses on raw materials, in-process samples, and finished products according to established procedures and quality standards.
  • Operate and maintain laboratory equipment, including but not limited to gas chromatographs, spectrometers, and titration systems.
  • Prepare chemical solutions, reagents, and standards with accuracy and precision.
  • Document experimental data, observations, and results clearly and concisely in laboratory notebooks and electronic systems.
  • Assist in the development and validation of new analytical methods.
  • Conduct basic troubleshooting of laboratory instruments and partner with senior staff on complex issues.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment, fostering and upholding all safety protocols and regulations.
  • Participate in inventory management of laboratory supplies and chemicals.
  • Collaborate with other team members to contribute to departmental goals and support project milestones.
  • Connect and communicate effectively with internal stakeholders regarding sample status and analytical results.

Required Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related scientific field.
  • Experience: 0-2 years of experience in a laboratory setting (experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment is a plus).
  • Technical Skills: Basic understanding of analytical chemistry principles, laboratory techniques, and safety protocols.
  • Equipment: Familiarity with common laboratory instrumentation (e.g., Gas Chromatography [GC], UV-Vis, FTIR) is highly desirable.
  • Software: Proficiency with standard digital productivity tools (Google Workspace/MS Office).

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Attention to Detail: Ability to precisely follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and accurately document experimental data.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for reporting results and collaborating with internal stakeholders.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities when handling lab instruments or unexpected data variations.
  • Collaboration: Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a cross-functional plant operations team.
  • Safety & Quality Focus: Deep commitment to maintaining a clean, organized, and compliant laboratory environment.

The hourly base pay range for this position in California is $31.00/hr. Please note that the hourly base pay information is a general guideline only. Airgas considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/ training, key skills as well as market and business considerations when extending an offer.
