What is an entry level packaging engineer?

Entry level packaging engineers are professionals who design, develop, and test packaging solutions for various products, typically at the beginning stage of their careers. They work with materials like paper, plastic, glass, and metal to create packages that protect products and appeal to consumers. These engineers often assist with packaging prototypes, compliance testing, and cost analysis, under the supervision of senior engineers. Their work ensures products are safe, efficient to transport, and meet regulatory standards.

What are some typical projects an entry level packaging engineer might work on during their first year?

As an Entry Level Packaging Engineer, you can expect to contribute to a variety of projects, such as developing new packaging concepts, improving existing packaging for efficiency or sustainability, and conducting tests to ensure product protection during shipping. You'll often collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product development, manufacturing, and supply chain, to align packaging solutions with business needs. These projects provide valuable exposure to industry standards, materials, and regulatory requirements, helping you quickly build foundational skills and industry knowledge.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level packaging engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Packaging Engineer, you need a background in engineering (typically a bachelor's degree in packaging, mechanical, or industrial engineering), along with fundamental knowledge of packaging materials and design principles. Familiarity with CAD software, packaging testing equipment, and industry standards such as ISTA or ASTM is commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork and communication skills help you excel in this role. These skills ensure the development of safe, cost-effective, and innovative packaging solutions that meet client needs and regulatory requirements.
