Job description

POSITION PURPOSE:

The City of Birmingham (EOE) is seeking qualified candidates for the part-time position of Streets/Sewer/Water (SSW) Laborer in the Department of Public Services. Under the supervision of the Streets/Sewer/Water Foreman, this entry-level position performs maintenance and operation of public infrastructure.

FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

This list is not to be treated as all inclusive.

  1. Work includes outdoor physical labor.
  2. Operation of various types of equipment, including dump trucks, snow plows, and light construction equipment.
  3. Performs a variety of miscellaneous duties related to work projects;
    1. Patching roads
    2. Painting fire hydrants
    3. Placing barricades
    4. Maintaining vehicles
    5. Plowing/salting
  4. Assists other crew personnel as required.
  5. Additional related responsibilities as assigned.

NECESSARY SKILLS:

  • Must be able to operate equipment
  • Must have knowledge of safety procedures
  • Must exercise good judgment
  • Time management
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Ability to work well with others

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a high school diploma, or its equivalent
  • Minimum age of 18 years old with a valid driver's license
  • Prefer 2-3 years of experience in the operation of light and medium-duty construction equipment
  • Prefer possession of a State of Michigan commercial driver's license, group A or B, with tanker endorsement

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be able to lift at least 50lbs
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time
  • Must be able to work outside in extreme conditions (heat, cold, snow, rain, etc.)
  • Must be able to operate heavy machinery

  • Office space including desk, computer, and phone
  • City provided keys
  • City provided tools
