What is entry level medical coding?

Entry level medical coding refers to the process of assigning standardized codes to medical diagnoses, procedures, and services for billing and record-keeping purposes, usually performed by individuals new to the field. Entry level medical coders work in hospitals, clinics, or physician offices and rely on coding manuals, such as ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS, to accurately document patient information. Training is often required, and many entry level positions expect candidates to have completed a medical coding certificate or associate degree. Accuracy and attention to detail are crucial skills for these roles, as errors can impact billing and patient care.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level medical coder, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Medical Coder, you need a basic understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and coding systems, often supported by a certificate in medical coding or health information technology. Familiarity with ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS coding systems, and electronic health record (EHR) software is typically required. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for ensuring accuracy and collaborating with healthcare teams. These skills are essential to maintain compliance, ensure proper billing, and support the financial health of medical practices.

What are some common challenges faced by entry level medical coders, and how can they be addressed?

Entry-level medical coders often face challenges such as understanding complex medical terminology, keeping up with frequent coding updates, and ensuring accuracy under tight deadlines. To address these challenges, new coders should regularly review coding guidelines, seek mentorship from experienced colleagues, and utilize ongoing training resources. Staying organized and asking questions when uncertain can also help build confidence and prevent errors, leading to a smoother transition into the role.

Common Search IntentEntry Level Medical Coding vs Medical Billing

Entry Level Medical Coding involves assigning standardized codes to medical diagnoses and procedures, focusing on accurate documentation. Medical Billing Specialists handle submitting claims, following up on payments, and managing insurance processes. While both roles often work together and share similar environments, their core responsibilities differ: coding centers on documentation, billing on reimbursement. Certifications like CPC benefit both roles, making them complementary in healthcare revenue cycle management.

How to get hired as an entry level medical coder with no experience?

Entry level medical coders can improve their chances by completing a recognized medical coding training program and obtaining certification such as the CPC from the AAPC. Gaining familiarity with coding software and medical terminology, along with internships or volunteer work, can also help demonstrate skills to employers seeking candidates with little or no experience.

Job description

Underground Plumber Apprentice
About the Role
The Underground Plumber Apprentice supports the installation, repair, and maintenance of underground sewer, water, and drain lines. Working under the direction of a licensed journeyman plumber, you'll learn to read blueprints and site plans, assist with pipe fitting, joining, and testing, and get hands-on training with trenching and excavation work. This is an entry-level opportunity for someone looking to build a career in underground plumbing while working toward full licensure.
Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with installing, repairing, and replacing underground sewer, water, and drain lines for residential customers.
  • Learn to read and interpret blueprints, site plans, and specifications to help locate and lay pipe.
  • Support safe operation of trenching, excavation, and pipe-laying equipment in compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Help diagnose and troubleshoot underground plumbing issues, including leaks, blockages, and line breaks.
  • Assist with cutting, fitting, joining, and testing pipe using appropriate materials and techniques (PVC, cast iron, copper, etc.).
  • Help ensure all work meets local and state plumbing codes, permit requirements, and safety regulations.
  • Support coordination with municipal inspectors to schedule and pass required inspections.
  • Maintain accurate job documentation, including work orders, materials used, and time on site.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers on job scope, timelines, and any issues that arise.
  • Work safely around utility lines and coordinate with other trades on job sites as needed.
  • Keep company vehicle, tools, and equipment clean, organized, and in good working condition.
  • Help maintain a clean and safe job site, including proper backfill and restoration after excavation work.
Qualifications
  • Valid PA Plumber Apprentice license (or ability to obtain one).
  • Entry-level - no prior professional plumbing experience required; hands-on experience with tools, construction, or mechanical work is a plus.
  • Willingness to learn sewer and drain systems, residential underground plumbing, and related repair techniques.
  • Interest in operating trenching and excavation equipment; on-the-job training provided.
  • Results-driven mindset with a passion for learning quality workmanship.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, and service management software.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift heavy materials and work in physically demanding conditions, including trenches and confined spaces.
Interpersonal Qualifications
  • Customer service focus and mindset, with excellent ability to communicate and build relationships.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to troubleshoot issues both big and small.
  • Highly organized, with the ability to work quickly while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Hold yourself to a higher standard and exhibit a high level of integrity.
Why You'll Want to Work Here

  • Performance Pay directly tied to results - Get what you deserve.
  • Benefits you will use - Full medical, dental, and vision packages including fully employer paid options.
  • Secure your financial future - 401(k) with company match.
  • Speed and scale - Work with a company that operates at the speed of a start up with the investment backing of institutional investors.
  • We invest in your future - leadership training that directly results in bigger career opportunities.
