What is an entry level mechanical engineer?

Entry level mechanical engineers are recent graduates or those with limited professional experience who work on designing, developing, testing, and manufacturing mechanical devices and systems. They typically support senior engineers by performing calculations, creating technical drawings, and assisting with product development. Their responsibilities often include using computer-aided design (CAD) software, conducting tests, and preparing reports. Entry level positions provide valuable hands-on experience and foundational knowledge in the field, serving as a stepping stone toward more advanced engineering roles.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect as an entry level mechanical engineer?

As an entry-level mechanical engineer, you’ll typically work on a variety of tasks such as drafting and updating technical drawings, assisting with prototype development, and conducting basic analyses under the guidance of senior engineers. You may also be involved in quality testing, preparing documentation, and supporting the design or manufacturing process. Collaboration with cross-functional teams—including electrical engineers, manufacturing staff, and project managers—is common, providing valuable exposure to different aspects of the engineering process. This role offers a strong foundation for learning industry standards and developing technical problem-solving skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an entry level mechanical engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Mechanical Engineer, you need a solid grasp of engineering fundamentals, problem-solving abilities, and a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), engineering simulation tools, and basic knowledge of manufacturing processes are typically required. Strong teamwork, communication, and time management skills help you collaborate effectively and manage project deadlines. These competencies are crucial for delivering quality engineering solutions, adapting to project requirements, and contributing to successful team outcomes.

For over 90 years, we have been a nationally recognized architecture, engineering, and interior design firm. With a focus on healthcare and federal projects, we deliver impactful, innovative spaces that shape communities and improve lives. We create exceptional places for extraordinary people.
We're a passionate, collaborative team that values excellence, relationships, and fun. If you're looking to make a difference through meaningful work, let's build something great together.
RLF is seeking a full-time entry level Mechanical Engineer with a focus in HVAC. Working under the guidance of licensed engineers, you will assist in designing HVAC systems for healthcare and/or federal projects supporting every stage of project delivery from engineering calculations and Revit modeling to construction documentation and field observations. At RLF, you'll gain hands-on experience, receive mentorship from experienced professionals, and develop the technical and professional skills needed to grow into a successful consulting engineer.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design of HVAC and other building mechanical systems under the guidance of licensed engineers.
  • Develop and modify construction drawings and models using Autodesk Revit and other design software in accordance with company standards.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations to support equipment selection, system sizing, and design development.
  • Assist with reviewing applicable building codes, industry standards, and project requirements to support compliant and efficient designs.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, designers, and project teams to produce coordinated construction documents.
  • Participate in site visits and field investigations to gather existing conditions and verify design information.
  • Assist with construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and performing field observations.
  • Research HVAC equipment, materials, and building systems to identify solutions that meet project requirements.
  • Support project engineers by preparing technical documentation, design revisions, and project deliverables.
  • Assist in evaluating HVAC system alternatives based on energy efficiency, sustainability, constructability, and long-term performance.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews to ensure accurate and coordinated construction documents.
  • Communicate design questions and project updates with engineers, project managers, and other team members.
  • Manage assigned tasks to meet project schedules while maintaining a high level of quality and attention to detail.
  • Continue developing technical and professional skills through mentorship, training, project experience, and professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) a plus.
  • Coursework or internship experience with HVAC systems and/or an architectural and engineering (A/E) firm preferred.
  • Read and understand technical drawings, schematics, and other relevant reports.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and continuous learning in the field of mechanical engineering.
  • Basic understanding of HVAC system design principles and applicable building codes and standards.
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, or other relevant software design platforms.
  • Exposure to HVAC and calculation software such as Trane TRAE 3D Plus or Carrier HAP is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to demonstrate awareness and safely navigate an active construction site.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required to meet project deadlines and business needs.
