Entry Level Mechanical Engineer Training focuses on developing foundational engineering skills through training programs, preparing individuals for engineering roles. Mechanical Designers, on the other hand, specialize in creating detailed mechanical drawings and models, often requiring prior engineering knowledge. While both roles are integral to manufacturing and design industries, the training program emphasizes learning and development, whereas the designer role emphasizes applying design skills in real projects.

Can you get an entry level mechanical engineer training job without experience?

Entry level mechanical engineer training positions often do not require prior experience, but candidates typically need a relevant degree in mechanical engineering or a related field. Internships, co-op programs, or certifications in CAD software and basic engineering principles can improve chances of securing such training roles. Employers may also look for strong problem-solving skills and the ability to learn quickly.

How do I get my first job as an entry level mechanical engineer training?

To secure an entry-level mechanical engineer position, candidates should earn a relevant bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or a related field, develop proficiency with CAD software and engineering principles, and gain practical experience through internships or co-op programs. Building a strong resume that highlights technical skills, certifications, and project work can improve job prospects in this competitive field.

Job description

Join a team where design meets purpose. At RLF, our mission is to create high-performing environments that inspire and nurture the human spirit. For over 90 years, we have been a nationally recognized architecture, engineering, and interior design firm. With a focus on healthcare and federal projects, we deliver impactful, innovative spaces that shape communities and improve lives. We create exceptional places for extraordinary people.
We're a passionate, collaborative team that values excellence, relationships, and fun. If you're looking to make a difference through meaningful work, let's build something great together.
RLF is seeking a full-time entry level Mechanical Engineer with a focus in HVAC. Working under the guidance of licensed engineers, you will assist in designing HVAC systems for healthcare and/or federal projects supporting every stage of project delivery from engineering calculations and Revit modeling to construction documentation and field observations. At RLF, you'll gain hands-on experience, receive mentorship from experienced professionals, and develop the technical and professional skills needed to grow into a successful consulting engineer.
Responsibilities
  • Assist in the design of HVAC and other building mechanical systems under the guidance of licensed engineers.
  • Develop and modify construction drawings and models using Autodesk Revit and other design software in accordance with company standards.
  • Perform basic engineering calculations to support equipment selection, system sizing, and design development.
  • Assist with reviewing applicable building codes, industry standards, and project requirements to support compliant and efficient designs.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, designers, and project teams to produce coordinated construction documents.
  • Participate in site visits and field investigations to gather existing conditions and verify design information.
  • Assist with construction administration activities, including responding to RFIs, reviewing shop drawings, and performing field observations.
  • Research HVAC equipment, materials, and building systems to identify solutions that meet project requirements.
  • Support project engineers by preparing technical documentation, design revisions, and project deliverables.
  • Assist in evaluating HVAC system alternatives based on energy efficiency, sustainability, constructability, and long-term performance.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) reviews to ensure accurate and coordinated construction documents.
  • Communicate design questions and project updates with engineers, project managers, and other team members.
  • Manage assigned tasks to meet project schedules while maintaining a high level of quality and attention to detail.
  • Continue developing technical and professional skills through mentorship, training, project experience, and professional development.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering preferred. Associate's degree in Engineering Technology, Drafting, or related field (for Designer positions), or equivalent combination of education and experience considered.
  • Engineer-In-Training (EIT) a plus.
  • Coursework or internship experience with HVAC systems and/or an architectural and engineering (A/E) firm preferred.
  • Read and understand technical drawings, schematics, and other relevant reports.
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, with the ability to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to effectively interact with multidisciplinary teams and clients.
  • Demonstrated commitment to professional development and continuous learning in the field of mechanical engineering.
  • Basic understanding of HVAC system design principles and applicable building codes and standards.
  • Experience with Revit, AutoCAD, or other relevant software design platforms.
  • Exposure to HVAC and calculation software such as Trane TRAE 3D Plus or Carrier HAP is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365.
  • Ability to demonstrate awareness and safely navigate an active construction site.
  • Flexibility in work hours may be required to meet project deadlines and business needs.

Why join us?
