In an entry-level math job, you may use computation software and modeling theory to help with data analysis, write software applications to help answer math problems, or teach math to students of varying ages. In this context, entry-level refers to the amount of experience needed for the job, not the complexity of the math involved; entry-level math jobs may use graduate-level mathematics. Most entry-level math jobs are in collaborative environments, whether you work alongside other tutors or with senior personnel who also understand the math of your job and can review your work.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Entry Level Math professional, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Entry Level Math professional, you need a solid understanding of mathematical concepts, problem-solving abilities, and at least a bachelor's degree in mathematics or a related field. Familiarity with mathematical software such as MATLAB, Excel, or Python, as well as data analysis tools, is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you interpret data and convey findings clearly. These skills are crucial for accurately solving problems, supporting decision-making, and contributing to team projects in mathematical or analytical roles.

What are some common challenges faced by entry-level math professionals in their first year on the job?

Entry-level math professionals often encounter challenges such as adapting to real-world problem-solving, managing tight deadlines, and effectively communicating complex mathematical concepts to colleagues from non-mathematical backgrounds. Company:

The Boeing Company

Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) is seeking a Entry-Level Guidance, Navigation & Control Engineer to join the Flying Qualities and Autonomy Technology Group as part of the Vertical Lift Division located in Ridley Park, PA.

We participate in all phases of design and testing, and support all of Boeing's vertical lift aircraft, including the Apache, AH-6, Chinook, MH-139, V-22 Osprey, and other developmental aircraft.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Analyze air vehicle stability and control characteristics to ensure acceptable handling qualities in compliance with specifications.

  • Apply control theory to the design of control laws that achieve desired characteristics for dynamic control response, gust or disturbance rejection, system failure robustness, and loads considerations.

  • Develop and validate linear and nonlinear mathematical analysis and simulation models of air vehicle and subsystems using theory and test data, including wind tunnel and flight test.

  • Support the design of new and modified rotorcraft configurations from a stability, control, and handling qualities perspective.

  • Perform wind tunnel testing, pilot-in-the-loop flight simulation, hardware in the loop laboratory testing, and flight testing in support of vehicle design and analysis.

  • Apply tools such as Matlab/Simulink and other modern and legacy programing languages in both Windows and Unix-based environments.

  • Collaborate with test pilots and with engineers in other engineering disciplines such as aerodynamics, dynamics, avionics systems, structural design, and crew systems design, to optimize vehicle level characteristics.

  • Occasional travel to support flight testing at off-site locations. These test sites could include cold weather sites, high altitude sites, or ships at sea.

  • Ability to work flexible hours, including overtime and occasional weekends when necessary to support test activities. (Note: These unique support requirements are infrequent, but possible)

This position is expected to be 100% on-site at the Ridley Park, PA location.

  • Engineering coursework and experience in linear stability analysis including aero-servo-elastic effects.

  • Completion of rotorcraft-centric engineering courses, or other engineering-level exposure to rotorcraft concepts and characteristics.

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, with coursework in control systems and flight-related concepts.

Typical Education and Experience: Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), computer science, engineering data science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor), or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience or non-US equivalent qualifications.
