Job Title: Survey Technician / Survey Crew Member

Job Description

This role supports field surveying operations throughout Southeast Michigan as a Survey Technician / Survey Crew Member. You will work closely with a Crew Chief to perform boundary, topographic, ALTA, and construction staking surveys for residential, commercial, and public infrastructure projects, ensuring accurate data collection and reliable survey results.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with field data collection using GPS equipment, total stations, and data collectors to support a wide range of survey projects.
  • Support boundary, topographic, ALTA, and construction staking surveys for residential, commercial, and public infrastructure sites.
  • Record accurate field notes and maintain detailed documentation of survey measurements and observations.
  • Prepare, set up, operate, and properly maintain survey equipment, including GPS units, total stations, and data collectors.
  • Work closely with Crew Chiefs and project teams to plan and complete survey assignments safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
  • Perform outdoor field work in varying terrain and weather conditions, ensuring adherence to safety procedures and project requirements.
  • Assist with construction staking and layout activities to guide construction crews and verify project alignment.
  • Collect precise field data and measurements needed for drafting, mapping, and engineering design.
  • Collaborate with sr staff, take direction, and contribute to a positive and productive field crew environment.

Essential Skills

  • 1+ years of land surveying experience preferred; entry-level candidates with relevant education or internship experience may be considered.
  • Experience using GPS equipment, total stations, and data collectors in a field surveying environment preferred.
  • Familiarity with construction staking practices and fundamental land surveying principles.
  • Ability to work as part of a field crew and collaborate effectively with Crew Chiefs and project teams.
  • Strong communication skills to coordinate field activities and report findings clearly.
  • Willingness to learn, take direction from sr staff, and develop technical surveying skills.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift survey equipment and perform physically demanding outdoor work.
  • Comfort working outdoors in varying terrain and weather conditions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • AutoCAD experience is a plus and supports drafting and mapping of survey data.
  • Familiarity with Civil 3D is beneficial for integrating survey data into engineering and design workflows.
  • Basic drafting skills to assist with preparing survey drawings and documentation.
  • Experience with topographic surveys and ALTA surveys is advantageous.
  • Bkgd as a Survey Technician, Instrument Person, Survey Crew Member, or Land Survey Technician is highly relevant.
  • Demonstrated ability to collect accurate field data and maintain organized field notes.

Work Environment

This is an on-site, full-time position based in Clinton Township, supporting field surveying operations across Southeast Michigan. You will primarily work outdoors as part of a field crew, operating GPS units, total stations, and data collectors in a variety of terrains and weather conditions. The role involves regular lifting and handling of survey equipment and requires adherence to safety practices on active residential, commercial, and public infrastructure sites. Office-based tasks may include assisting with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, and drafting work to process and document collected survey data, contributing to a collaborative and professional project team environment.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Macomb, MI.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
