Summary:
The general laborer job classification encompasses non-supervisory work that primarily requires physical effort and ability to perform laboring duties that involve little or no specialized skill or past work experience. The general laborer may be required to perform work incidental to many different occupations, but their work does not require the minimum levels of skills and knowledge for classification in those occupations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but may not be limited to, the following:
Demonstrate the ability to understand assigned work duties
Demonstrate the ability to physically perform assigned tasks
Demonstrate the ability to understand emergency alarms/signals
Demonstrate the ability to properly wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
Must be capable of working in confined, or enclosed spaces
Must be capable of working at heights with proper PPE
Must be able to climb gangways/brows; ladders; and, stairwells
Must be capable of standing for long periods
Must be capable of climbing; bending; stooping; kneeling; and reaching overhead
Must be able to work around fumes, smoke, dust, etc. with proper PPE
Demonstrate the ability to safely operate dual action sanders; high speed sanders; pneumatic needle guns; pneumatic chipping hammers; pneumatic chisel; pneumatic jackhammers
May be assigned to clean tanks and/or bilges
May be assigned to work in drydocks removing mud; sandblasting media; and/or miscellaneous debris
May be assigned to fire watch duties
May be assigned custodial duties
May be assigned grounds maintenance duties
Skills and Knowledge:
The general laborer shall have the knowledge and ability to perform simple manual tasks; have a basic understanding of cleaning; lifting techniques; grounds maintenance; the ability to adjust to work conditions; able to demonstrate the proper use, and routine operator maintenance of hand tools and equipment; understand the location and proper storage/disposal requirements of the materials; tools; and, equipment used; demonstrate the ability to understand common signs and general instructions; follow oral instructions; follow safety rules and procedures; lift and move light to medium weight objects (see physical effort below); able to safely use industrial cleaners (typically used in households) with proper PPE.
Responsibility:
The general laborer receives specific instructions from a higher grade worker or supervisor; shall not be required to establish conditions (i.e., have equipment locked or tagged out) in order to accomplish assigned duties; shall have the ability to select the most appropriate hand tool to accomplish a task; is responsible to identify and report obvious hazards; malfunctioning tools/equipment; damaged materials; spills/releases, and other situations that may impact work operations or safety to the supervisor. The supervisor overseeing the activities of the general laborer shall check work progress as routinely as necessary to ensure the safety of these individuals.
Physical Demands:
The general laborer is required to perform work that requires light to moderate physical effort; tasks typically involve regularly lifting and carrying light to medium weight objects of 5 to 14 kilograms (10 to 30 pounds); occasionally lifting and carrying objects weighting up to 20 kilograms (45 pounds); and, frequently pushing wheelbarrows and/or carts of mud or blasting media requiring similar effort. Continual walking, bending, crawling, stooping, bending, reaching standing and, climbing is required.
Working Conditions:
The general laborer works both indoors and outdoors and may be subject to perform duties in changing climatic conditions. Indoor tasks are often accomplished in office buildings or well lighted and ventilated areas such as warehouses, loading docks and/or trade shops. Outdoor tasks may subject the general laborer to be exposed to weather and temperature extremes, drafts, noise, fumes, vapors, dust, and dirt.
As work conditions change frequently in the ship repair and maintenance industry, the general laborer must be physically able to adapt to changing work assignments.
