Job Title - ELS Lab Assistant

Job Location - Austin, TX 78744

Contract โ€“ 12+ Month

Pay- $16/hr.

Job Description - General Overview: At an entry-level, this position performs courier, warehouse shipping/receiving, glassware, and sample disposal duties. This position develops competence by performing structured work assignments and receives instruction, guidance and direction from supervisor, manager and/or more experienced colleagues.

  • May perform one or more of the following essential duties: glassware cleaning, sample checks, basic data entry (transcription).
  • Maintains sample storage areas and retrieves samples as needed. Disposes of expired samples according to proper SOP's and regulatory requirements in a timely manner.
  • Provides general lab assistance to laboratory staff.
  • Completes all initial training and ongoing annual certifications prior to the deadline for assigned laboratory duties and ensures all training records are documented and submitted to the supervisor for review.
  • Complies with the Environmental Laboratory Services safety program, chemical hygiene plan, quality assurance program, pertinent standard operating procedures (SOPs), and applicable regulatory mandates, standards, policies and codes pertaining to assigned duties. This general overview only includes essential functions of the job and does not imply that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee occupying this position. Employees will be required to follow any other job-related instructions and to perform any other job-related duties requested by supervisor or management.

Minimum Qualifications: A High School Diploma or equivalent GED. Driver's license

Preferred Qualifications: Prior laboratory support experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of hazardous waste materials
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety and environmental policies, practices, and procedures

  • Skill in monitoring and maintaining bottle inventory and labels
  • Skill in communicating effectively with team members and supervision
  • Skill in communicating customer requests to staff
  • Skill in meeting deadlines
  • Basic skill level in office productivity applications (such as email, word processing, spreadsheets, etc.)
  • Basic skill level in the Laboratory Information Management System for data entry and extraction
  • Ability to work in a team environment
  • Ability to remain alert and maintain safety awareness
  • Ability to comply with Environmental Laboratory Services safety program, chemical hygiene plan, quality assurance program plan, pertinent standard operating procedure (SOP's), and applicable regulatory mandate, standards, policies, and codes pertinent to assigned duties

Work Environment:

    • Work hours are primarily spent in a laboratory environment
    • Some work hours are spent in a vehicle or at customer locations
    • Work involves weekends, holidays, and non-standard hours
    • Work involves exposure to noise
    • Work involves the use of protective equipment
    • Work involves handling and inspecting equipment containing hazardous chemicals and wastes
    • Work involves exposure to high speed rotating machinery
    • Work involves working around areas with pressurized gas and chemicals with the potential for explosion and fire

Physical Demands:

  • Work involves constant standing and/or walking in standing at lab counters and sinks
  • Work involves frequent finger/hand manipulation in using a keyboard and mouse
  • Work involves frequent finger/hand manipulation in prepping lab glassware, pipetting preservatives, and disposing of samples
  • Frequently lifts and carries up to 80 pounds in moving sample containers, waste drums, and racks of bottles, lifting ice chests, and moving supply containers and boxes
  • Frequently pushes or pulls up to 150 pounds in pushing and pulling lab carts
  • Work involves frequent lifting up to 80 pounds from the floor to the waist
  • Work involves occasional finger/hand manipulation in using hand tools and operating equipment
  • Work involves climbing, crawling, crouching, or other non-sitting positions in preparing bottle orders, sample disposal, maintaining sample storage, assisting with sample receiving, and assisting with sampling and field activities less than 20% of the time
  • Performs work at chest level or higher, including overhead full arm extension holding up to 20 pounds less than 20% of the time
  • Work involves climbing of ladders less than 20% of the time
