Job Summary:
The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado Anschutz is looking for an entry-level research services professional to join our lab (diaslab.org). The identified applicant will be responsible for managing human cell culture lines and conducting basic molecular biology experiments, such as DNA, RNA, and protein analysis, under the supervision of Dr. Dias and more senior laboratory members. The goal of the research project broadly is to better understand essential mechanisms underlying the disorder Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome, a neurodegenerative disorder associated with cognitive decline, psychiatric co-morbidities, and tremor and ataxia. Our lab affords a collaborative mindset and opportunities for professional development and growth for those with a variety of career aspirations. Opportunities to develop independent projects within the field are possible for those interested. Former and current lab members have been highly successful in publishing, obtaining fellowships, and pursuing long-term professional goals.
Key Responsibilities:
  • The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI) and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques required for research projects.
  • Perform experiments, tabulate, and analyze research.
  • Support analytical testing process using standard lab support knowledge in the collection and review of conditions, including preserving samples, completing sample preparation, documenting, and communicating results.
  • Perform pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical test processes and evaluate the results produced.
  • Prepare lab for daily operations, including stocking materials, equipment, safety, cleanliness, and related areas.
  • Provide animal care related to research studies, as necessary.
  • Pick up, transport, and maintain results, samples, documents, materials, and other items as needed.
  • Dispose of laboratory materials and samples using well-established guidelines and instructions.
  • Review, complete, and process logs, documents, databases, and related materials and information.
  • Provide support in researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve process, unit, and related issues.
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operational, and management needs.
  • Assist with ensuring compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations; receive guidance and direction or escalate when required.
  • Conducting molecular biology experiments and managing cell lines for active ongoing projects in the lab in collaboration with other lab members.

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.

Substitutions:
  • A combination of education and related technical/military/paraprofessional experience may be substituted for a bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
  • An advanced degree (Master's or Doctorate) may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis if the degree is in a field of study directly related to the work assignment.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or a related field.
  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab.
  • One (1) year of experience working with primary human cells or tissues.
  • One (1) year of experience with sterile cell culture technique, molecular biology methodologies (qPCR, western blotting, IHC, etc.).

Must be willing and able to pass national criminal and sex offender background checks.
Must successfully pass a 10-panel drug screen through Children's Hospital Colorado.

The starting salary range for this position has been established as $47,811 to $64,067.
