Job Summary

The Counsel in ESPN’s Legal Department will assist the Deputy Chief Counsel, Assistant Chief Counsel and other attorneys in fulfilling the legal affairs and requirements of the corporation. Areas of focus include programming acquisitions, production agreements, marketing and promotion, digital media, distribution and direct‑to‑consumer offerings.

What You Will Do
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws and industry standards.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate contracts and other legal documents.
  • Maintain knowledge in specialized legal areas: content, intellectual property, marketing, digital media.
  • Keep internal clients fully informed of legal issues and advise them on risks.
  • Review and edit substantial policies and documents from client departments.
  • Manage outside counsel for litigation and legal matters.
  • Supervise, on a non‑exclusive basis, one or more Paralegal and Legal Assistant colleagues.
  • Participate in professional associations, seminars, conferences as requested.
  • Implement enhancements to processes and workflows.
  • Translate corporate strategy into goals and recommend actions based on legal positioning.
  • Perform other duties delegated by senior counsel.
  • Recommend strategies to minimize legal risks.
Required Qualifications & Skills
  • At least 2 years of contract law experience, including extensive drafting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with content agreement negotiating and intellectual property law.
  • Knowledge of entertainment, broadcast, cable, internet, mobile, sports, and digital media businesses.
  • Experience with audiovisual production legal work and licensing.
  • Familiarity with marketing matters.
  • Experience supervising paralegal/legal support staff.
Education
  • JD or equivalent.
  • Admission to Connecticut or New York State Bar in good standing or willingness to be Registered In‑House Counsel.
Salary Range

For Bristol, CT: $144,300 – $186,600 per year. For NY, NY: $151,200 – $195,500 per year. Base pay may vary based on internal equity and other factors. A bonus and/or long‑term incentive may be provided.
