Job description

Introduction

At IBM Research, we are the innovation engine of IBM. Exploring what's next in computing anda shaping the technologies the world will rely on tomorrow. From advancing AI and hybrid cloud to pioneering practical quantum computing, we anticipate challenges and unlock new opportunities for clients, partners, and society. Working in Research means joining a team that accelerates discovery at the intersection of high-performance computing, AI, quantum, and cloud. You'll collaborate with leading scientists, engineers, and visionaries to push boundaries and turn ideas into reality. With a culture built on curiosity, creativity, and collaboration, IBM Research offers the opportunity to grow your career while contributing to breakthroughs that transform industries and change the world.

Your role and responsibilities

As a Research Scientist in quantum hardware modeling you will simulate and design the next generation of IBM Quantum processors. Your expertise could span multiple fields including superconducting device theory, Hamiltonian simulations in large Hilbert spaces, electromagnetic simulation, and microwave engineering. You will help to add ambitious new technologies and capabilities to quantum processors such as novel gates and couplers, new readout and reset methods, improvements to coherence, and quantum transduction. Working closely with a multidisciplinary team of physicists and engineers you will analyze and optimize current quantum hardware, and incorporate those lessons into future device designs.

Required technical and professional expertise

  • Master's degree in physics, electrical engineering, or a related field
  • Experience in modeling superconducting quantum hardware
  • Experience working with test/experimentalist to analyze data

Preferred technical and professional experience

  • Doctorate in physics, electrical engineering, or related field
  • Experience in circuit quantization and circuit QED
  • Experience in simulations with large Hilbert spaces
  • Experience in electromagnetic and microwave simulation
  • Experience in design and layout of superconducting circuits
